JOB PURPOSE.
The Heavy Diesel Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy-duty diesel-powered equipment and vehicles. This includes trucks, trailers, construction equipment, agricultural machinery, and other diesel-operated equipment. The mechanic ensures all equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
Role and Responsibilities
· Perform preventive maintenance on diesel engines and heavy equipment.
· Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic system issues.
· Repair and replace defective components, including engines, transmissions, brakes, steering systems, and suspensions.
· Conduct inspections and identify potential equipment failures.
· Use diagnostic software, computerized equipment, and hand tools to troubleshoot problems.
· Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
· Perform DOT inspections and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
· Test equipment following repairs to verify proper operation.
· Respond to field service calls and emergency breakdowns as required.
· Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
· Order and manage parts and shop supplies as needed.
· Collaborate with operations and management teams to minimize equipment downtime.
Preferred Skills, Qualifications & Behaviors:
Required Qualifications
· High school diploma or GED.
· Technical training in diesel technology or related field preferred.
· 2–5 years of experience repairing heavy diesel equipment, trucks, or construction machinery.
· Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and air brake systems.
· Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair documentation.
· Valid driver's license; CDL preferred.
· Ability to operate diagnostic tools and computerized repair equipment.
· Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Physical Requirements
· Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
· Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crawl, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
· Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
· Ability to safely operate shop equipment and heavy machinery.
Preferred Certifications
· ASE Diesel Certification.
· OEM Certifications (Cummins, Caterpillar, John Deere, Kenworth, Peterbilt, etc.).
· CDL Class A or B.
· OSHA Safety Training.
