Job Description
The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting tasks on field equipment, machinery, and vehicles. This role ensures that all assets are operating safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards and regulations. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who excels in independent work, is adaptable to changing field conditions, and maintains a strong focus on safety and quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems on field equipment.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) and condition-based monitoring.
- Respond promptly to service calls and emergency breakdowns in the field.
- Maintain accurate service records, logs, and documentation using digital systems or job tickets.
- Ensure proper use and care of tools, diagnostic equipment, and Blackwood-owned assets.
- Identify recurring equipment issues and recommend long-term corrective actions.
- Collaborate with supervisors, fleet coordinators, and other technicians to support operational efficiency.
- Maintain inventory of parts and supplies on service vehicles.
- Travel to various job sites as needed, including occasional overnight stays.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma
- Technical training or certification in mechanics, diesel technology, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in mechanical repair, preferably in a field-based environment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong mechanical aptitude with understanding of internal combustion engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
- Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, power tools, and maintenance software.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair procedures.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to equipment reliability.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
DOT & FMCSA
· Regulatory Compliance Knowledge – Familiarity with DOT and FMCSA safety regulations related to commercial vehicles, including inspection, repair, and maintenance standards.
· Preventive Maintenance Expertise – Ability to perform scheduled inspections, diagnostics, and repairs to ensure vehicles remain in compliance with federal and state safety requirements.
· Vehicle Inspection Proficiency – Skilled in conducting DOT-required annual inspections, pre-trip/post-trip evaluations, and documenting findings accurately.
· Recordkeeping & Documentation – Competence in completing maintenance logs, inspection reports, and compliance paperwork in line with FMCSA and DOT requirements.
· Safety Standards Adherence – Commitment to ensuring all repairs meet or exceed manufacturer specifications and DOT/FMCSA safety guidelines.
· Diagnostic & Troubleshooting Skills – Ability to quickly identify mechanical issues and apply cost-effective, compliant repair solutions.
· Technical Expertise – Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, maintenance software, and electronic logging systems relevant to fleet compliance.
· Audit & Compliance Support – Experience preparing maintenance records and inspection documentation for DOT or FMCSA audits.
· Collaboration – Ability to work closely with drivers, dispatch, and safety personnel to address vehicle issues that may impact compliance or operational safety.
· Attention to Detail – Strong focus on accuracy and thoroughness in all inspections, repairs, and compliance documentation.
Licenses & Certifications
Required~
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
Preferred, but not required~
- OSHA 10/30 certification
Traveling / Working Conditions
- Field environment; exposure to varying weather conditions, loud noise, and potentially hazardous materials.
- Regular travel within designated regions; occasional out-of-area assignments.
- May require lifting up to 75 lbs and standing or working in confined areas for extended periods.
