Job SummaryThe R&D Prototype Assembler (Contract to hire) assembles pre-production robotic systems, subassemblies, and components with moderate supervision. This role works from engineering drawings, CAD models, and wiring diagrams to integrate mechanical, electrical, and control systems into functional prototypes. In addition to assembly, the position plays an active role in Design for Excellence (DFx) initiatives by documenting build observations, suggesting improvements, and participating in manufacturability and serviceability discussions. This position builds on foundational skills to contribute effectively to both prototype development and engineering collaboration, ensuring designs are optimized for production readiness. Key ResponsibilitiesInterpret and work from detailed engineering drawings, CAD models, wiring schematics, and written instructions to assemble robotic prototypes.Assemble mechanical frames, cable harnesses, actuators, and sensors with precision and in accordance with specifications.Perform moderate rework, adjustments, and component replacements with minimal supervision.Participate in DFx activities by providing input on assembly efficiency, part accessibility, and potential quality improvements.Assist in functional and basic performance testing to validate prototype operation.Document build processes, tooling requirements, and any issues encountered for engineering review.Maintain safe working practices and ensure proper handling of mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic components.Work collaboratively with engineers, machinists, and technicians to resolve assembly challenges.Support continuous improvement initiatives for prototype builds and DFx feedback loops. Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesAbility to read and interpret detailed engineering documentation, including mechanical and electrical drawings.Competence in using hand tools, torque tools, soldering equipment, and measuring instruments.Working knowledge of basic robotics components such as motors, sensors, and control hardware.Understanding of mechanical tolerances, wiring best practices, and basic ESD precautions.Capable of troubleshooting straightforward mechanical and electrical assembly issues.Effective communication skills for sharing assembly findings and collaborating with engineers.Basic proficiency in documenting build processes and providing constructive feedback for design improvements.
