What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Ontology & Semantic Systems Architect position at BlackFrost?
This role begins as equity-based until funding closes Q1 2026**
About BlackFrost
BlackFrost is building the world’s first Infrastructure Intelligence Utility™, enabling real-time physical-world understanding through our two core systems:
• AuralisIQ™ – sensor telemetry infrastructure
• FrostBase™ – our semantic layer that converts raw signals into primitives → events → states
We’re creating a new class of intelligence for the physical world — and we’re looking for a Senior Ontology & Semantic Systems Architect who can help operationalize FrostBase’s structure at the engineering level.
This is a high-impact, architecture-driven role for someone who loves imposing order, consistency, and semantics on complex, real-world systems.
You join as part of the founding technical team and transition into full salaried compensation immediately after the raise.
⸻
The Role: Senior Ontology & Semantic Systems Architect (FrostBase)
You will translate our conceptual PSAI architecture into a formal, usable, engineering-ready semantic system.
Your responsibilities include:
What You’ll Own
• Define FrostBase’s primitive schema
• Create and maintain event definitions state transition rules
• Design the internal semantic data model / FrostGraph representation
• Build documentation, standards, and canonical structures for engineering
• Work with AuralisIQ engineers to map raw telemetry → normalized primitives
• Work with AI engineers to operationalize primitives → inference pathways
• Ensure FrostBase remains consistent, scalable, and implementation-ready
• Act as the “semantic backbone” between telemetry, AI, and product teams
This is NOT a research-heavy ontology PhD role.
It is a practical engineering semantics architecture role.
⸻
Who You Are
You thrive at the intersection of:
• structured data modeling
• distributed systems
• semantics schema design
• event-driven architecture
• knowledge representation
• organizing complex, messy world data into logical frameworks
You may have backgrounds in:
• systems architecture
• data modeling
• IoT / telemetry systems
• knowledge graphs (applied, not academic)
• event-stream processing
• semantic modeling inside enterprise or industrial systems
You’re obsessed with:
• clarity
• structure
• consistency
• frameworks
• building semantic standards from scratch
• turning ambiguity into an organized model
If you think in diagrams, schemas, and structured representations — you will love this role.
⸻
Location Requirement
You must live within 3 hours of Dayton, Ohio
(Cincinnati, Columbus, Indianapolis, Louisville, Lexington, etc.)
This role is hybrid and requires periodic in-person collaboration with our executive and engineering leadership team as we build FrostBase, stand up AuralisIQ infrastructure, and engage with university research partners.
⸻
Compensation
Pre-raise:
Equity-based founding technical role
Post-raise:
Competitive salary expanded equity full benefits
This is a ground-floor opportunity to help define a new category of physical-world AI.
