Black Women for Wellness Action Project (BWWAP) is seeking an experienced, strategic Deputy Director of Policy and Political Campaigns to lead the development and execution of our public policy agenda. Black Women for Wellness Action Project is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization dedicated to advancing policies and electing leaders who improve the health, well-being, and quality of life for Black women, girls, and gender-expansive people.

Our work moves public policy forward, elects leaders who prioritize Black women's needs, shifts culture through media and storytelling, and empowers community members to engage in the fight for equity and justice. Position Summary

As the Deputy Director of Policy and Political Campaigns, you will serve as the organization's lead policy strategist, shaping legislative priorities and developing advocacy initiatives that center the lived experiences of Black women. Working closely with the Executive Director, Communications Team, and community organizers, you will translate community voices into policy solutions while strengthening relationships with lawmakers, coalition partners, researchers, and advocates.

This role sits at the intersection of public policy, research, advocacy, and movement building, ensuring that Black Women for Wellness Action Project remains a trusted voice in shaping policies that improve health and racial equity throughout California.

What You’ll Do

• Lead the development and implementation of the organization's legislative and public policy agenda.
• Monitor and analyze local, state, and federal legislation to identify opportunities, challenges, and emerging policy issues.
• Develop policy briefs, testimony, reports, fact sheets, and recommendations that support advocacy and legislative priorities.
• Build and maintain relationships with policymakers, government agencies, coalition partners, and community stakeholders to advance shared policy goals.
• Represent the organization at legislative hearings, policy tables, public meetings, and advocacy coalitions.
• Collaborate across organizing, political, communications, and development teams to ensure policy strategies align with organizational campaigns and community priorities.
• Supervise policy staff, consultants, interns, and cross-functional workgroups while fostering collaboration and professional growth.
• Ensure policy and advocacy activities comply with applicable nonprofit regulations and advance the organization's strategic objectives.

Who You Are

You are a collaborative leader who understands that meaningful policy begins with community voice. You are equally comfortable analyzing legislation, facilitating coalition meetings, briefing elected officials, and translating complex policy into clear, actionable recommendations.

What You’ll Bring

• Eight to twelve years of experience in public policy, legislative affairs, government relations, advocacy, or nonprofit leadership.
• Demonstrated success developing policy agendas, advancing legislative priorities, and influencing public policy.
• Strong understanding of California's legislative and regulatory processes.
• Experience building diverse coalitions and cultivating partnerships across government, philanthropy, academia, and community organizations.
• Exceptional research, writing, public speaking, and strategic communication skills.
• Experience supervising teams and managing complex policy initiatives.
• A deep commitment to racial justice, reproductive justice, health equity, civic engagement, and Black women's leadership.
• A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required; a Master's in Public Policy (MPP), Public Administration (MPA), Political Science, Law (JD), or a related field is strongly preferred.
