We are a design-build general contractor serving Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and the surrounding Triangle area. We specialize in new custom homes, major renovations, additions, ADUs, and kitchen/bath remodels.

In this hybrid role you will own full-cycle bookkeeping, A/R and A/P, account reconciliations, job costing, financial forecasting and reporting, payroll oversight, and core HR functions.
This is a key operational leadership role for someone who wants ownership of the company’s financial health and people processes in an award-winning design-build firm
serving high-end residential clients across the Triangle.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Bookkeeping
- Manage day-to-day full-cycle bookkeeping and accounting in QuickBooks, maintaining a construction-appropriate chart of accounts and a clean general ledger.
- Process accounts receivable: prepare/send client invoices (progress billings), track payments, manage collections, and handle retainage.
- Process accounts payable: review/approve subcontractor and vendor invoices against contracts or POs, manage timely payments while protecting cash flow.
- Perform monthly bank, credit card, and other account reconciliations; maintain strong internal controls and documentation.
- Oversee or process payroll (including time tracking review), payroll tax deposits, year-end filings, and 1099s for qualifying subcontractors.
Job Costing, Forecasting & Project Support
- Build and maintain accurate job costing: track and allocate labor, materials, subcontractors, equipment, and overhead to individual projects in real time.
- Analyze project profitability, prepare job cost reports and variance analysis, and partner with Project Managers on budget tracking and change order financial impacts.
- Develop weekly/monthly cash flow forecasts, project completion forecasts, and overall company financial projections.
- Prepare monthly financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow) and custom reports for ownership; support annual budgeting and bidding with historical cost data.
- Produce WIP (Work-in-Progress) schedules and other construction-specific reporting as needed.
HR Administration & Compliance
- Manage the employee lifecycle: support recruiting (postings, screening coordination, interview logistics), onboarding, personnel files, and offboarding.
- Administer benefits (open enrollment, carrier coordination) and support any retirement plan administration.
- Ensure compliance with federal and North Carolina employment laws (wage/hour, workers’ comp, unemployment, anti-discrimination, etc.); handle related reporting and audits.
- Serve as primary point of contact for employee questions on pay, benefits, policies, and time-off. Assist with performance management processes and employee handbook maintenance.
- Coordinate training records and safety program documentation in collaboration with site leadership. Systems, Reporting & Collaboration
- Integrate financial data with BuilderTrend (or similar construction management software) for job costing, reporting, and operational visibility.
- Use advanced Excel for financial modeling, analysis, dashboards, and ad-hoc reporting.
- Identify and implement process improvements, better internal controls, and software efficiencies as the company grows.
- Collaborate daily with ownership on strategic decisions and with field/project teams on cost control and operational alignment.
Who We’re Looking For
Must-Haves
- 4 years of hands-on bookkeeping or accounting experience, with meaningful exposure to construction or contracting industry work (job costing is non-negotiable).
- Strong working knowledge of construction accounting concepts (progress billing,job costing, percentage-of-completion or completed-contract methods, retainage,
etc.).
- Proficiency with QuickBooks (Online preferred).
- Experience handling core HR functions: payroll oversight, benefits administration, onboarding, and employment compliance.
- Exceptional attention to detail, integrity with sensitive financial/employee data, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize in a fast-moving small company.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field (or equivalent combination of education substantial relevant experience).
- Reliable transportation and ability to work primarily from the Durham office/showroom (some flexibility possible).
Preferred but Not Required
- Direct experience in residential construction, remodeling, or design-build firms.
- Familiarity with BuilderTrend (or similar) and its financial/job costing features.
- Knowledge of North Carolina employment laws and construction-specific regulations (e.g., lien laws, sales tax nuances).
- Experience preparing forecasts, budgets, and translating financial insights for non-financial stakeholders (owners, PMs).
- SHRM-CP, PHR, or basic payroll certification is a plus but not required.
Pay: $55,236.17 - $76,520.98 per year
