What are the responsibilities and job description for the Release of Information Clerk position at BLACK RIVER HEALTH INC?
Black River Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the full-time Release of Information (ROI) Clerk position. The ROI Clerk safeguards and protects patients’ rights to privacy by ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to the patient’s medical information and that all releases of information are in compliance with the request, authorization, company policy, and HIPAA statutes by performing the following duties under the direction of the department leader. This position is primarily located at Black River Health, 8th Street campus.
This position is:
- Full-time; on-site, 80 hours per pay period, Monday – Friday, benefited
Essential Duties:
- Handles all requests and inquiries for patient health information whether received via mail, e-mail, fax, phone or in-person. Verifies the patient's identity and confirms authorization is valid. Ensures the requesting party has a legal right to request a patient’s medical information.
- Provides excellent customer service by being attentive and respectful; insures understanding of customer request and follows-through as promised; and being proactive in identifying customers concerns or problems. Helps politely resolve customer service matters.
- Accesses computerized patient records and/or other computer systems for patient information needed to fulfill the request.
- Prioritizes release of information requests, retrieves medical records from active, inactive, and interdepartmental locations, and electronically tracks and delivers records following established procedures.
- Acts as an expert helping to direct release of information and other inquiries to the proper departments, ensuring resolution.
Educational Qualifications:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Prefer Associate Degree in Health Record Management
- Desire RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) certification from AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association)
- Minimum requirement: (2) two years Health Information Management experience
- Medical terminology knowledge required (either from experience or formal classes)
