ROLE OVERVIEW

Reports To: COO (dotted line to CFO)
Black Onyx Management is seeking a highly proactive, ownership-driven Senior Accountant or Accounting Manager to strengthen and modernize our internal accounting and finance function. This role is both operational and strategic, with responsibility for building automation, efficiency, and scalable processes while helping rebuild client-facing Accounting and Finance service offerings.
This is not just a traditional accounting role. We need a forward-thinking financial partner who can drive cost control, financial forecasting, and proactive financial management while positioning to serve external clients.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Core Accounting Operations (40%)
● Own day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, reconciliations, and month-end close
● Improve accuracy, timeliness, and financial visibility across all accounts
● Lead automation and process improvement initiatives to increase efficiency
● Document and standardize accounting procedures for consistency and scalability
● Manage accounts payable and receivable with focus on cash flow optimization
Financial Planning & Cost Control (30%)
Cost Control & Management: Continuously monitor and analyze expenses; identify cost-saving opportunities
● Revenue Projections: Build and maintain rolling revenue forecasts based on pipeline and proposals
● Expense Projections: Create detailed expense forecasts by category and project
● Capital Preservation: Actively manage working capital and recommend optimization strategies
● Managerial Expense Analysis: Track departmental spending; provide actionable insights to managers
● Proactive Spending Forecasting: Anticipate needs and alert leadership before issues arise
● Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and financial scenario planning
● Develop and maintain financial models for business planning and decision support
Project Financial Management (20%)
● Proposal Financial Review: Review proposals before they go out to ensure pricing accuracy and margin targets
● Project Invoicing Oversight: Track milestones and proactively manage invoicing schedules
● Revenue Recognition: Monitor project progress and ensure timely, accurate revenue recognition
● Project Profitability Tracking: Maintain real-time visibility into project margins
● Client Billing Status: Answer "Where is the invoice?" at any moment for any project
● Invoice Aging Management: Monitor AR aging and coordinate collection efforts
Client-Facing & Business Development (10%)
● Build Client Service Line: Help design accounting/finance services for external clients
● Forward-Thinking Solutions: Identify how Black Onyx can deliver financial management services
● Client Financial Presentations: Prepare client-facing financial reports as service line develops
● Consultative Approach: Develop expertise in advising clients on financial operations
● Business Line Development: Partner with leadership to define offerings and pricing models
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
● Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
● 5 years of progressive accounting experience
● Strong ownership mindset and proactive approach to financial management
● Demonstrated experience with financial forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis
● Experience managing project-based accounting and revenue recognition
● Excellent analytical skills with ability to translate data into actionable insights
● Strong communication skills for presenting financial information to non-financial stakeholders
● In-office availability
● Proficiency with accounting software and advanced Excel skills
Preferred (Strongly Desired)
● CPA or active progress toward CPA certification
● Experience in professional services, consulting, or project-based business environments
● Track record of implementing process improvements and automation
● Experience with financial modeling and scenario planning
● Background in cost control initiatives with measurable results
● Client-facing experience or business development exposure
● Familiarity with proposal/bid financial analysis
● Experience building or scaling finance functions in growing organizations
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Salary Range: $75,000 - $90,000 annually (commensurate with experience)
