POSITION SUMMARY
The Structural Steel Saw Operator is responsible for accurately cutting structural steel materials (beam, pipe, tube, channel, angle, and plate) to specification using band saws, cold saws, and related cutting equipment. This role ensures precise measurements, clean cuts, and proper material handling to support fabrication, construction, and installation operations.
Requirements
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate horizontal and vertical band saws to cut structural steel per shop drawings and work orders
- Measure, mark, and verify material dimensions using tape measures, squares, and layout tools
- Interpret shop drawings, cut lists, and fabrication details
- Set up and adjust saw equipment for proper blade speed, feed rate, and material type
- Inspect materials before and after cutting to ensure quality and compliance with specifications
- Maintain proper blade selection and replace blades as needed
- Deburr and finish cut materials as required
- Safely operate forklifts, cranes, or material handling equipment (if certified)
- Maintain organized material staging and inventory control
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment
- Follow all OSHA and company safety standards
QUALIFICATIONS
- 2 years experience operating structural steel saws or similar fabrication equipment
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and cut lists
- Strong understanding of structural steel materials (W-beam, HSS, pipe, channel, angle)
- Basic math skills (fractions, decimals, measurement conversion)
- Ability to work in a fast-paced fabrication environment
- Forklift certification preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching
- Comfortable working in industrial/shop environments
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Indoor fabrication shop
- Exposure to noise, dust, and moving equipment
- PPE required (steel-toe boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves)
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE (Not Required)
- Experience in oil & gas, industrial construction, or commercial steel fabrication
- Knowledge of CNC saw systems
