Description
The Test Systems Design Engineer supports the design, development, and maintenance of automated and mechanical test systems used by the Quality Engineering team to validate product performance. This role focuses on creating and improving custom fixtures and machines that enable consistent, efficient, and accurate product testing. The engineer contributes to test system development, collaborates with peers on test infrastructure design, and drives continuous improvement within the lab.
· Designs, develops, and maintains both software and hardware for data acquisition systems for various product testing needs.
· Executes the design and fabrication of test fixtures for real-world assimilation and repeatability as it pertains to new product development, introduction, and evaluation of issues identified in production.
Education:
Required: Bachelor's degree in Automation, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or a related science
Preferred: Master's degree in Automation, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or a related science.
Alternative: 4 years of demonstrated experience without an engineering degree.
Skills and general experience:
Required: Familiarity in building and troubleshooting low voltage electrical systems, as well as experience in data acquisition/control programming environments and 3D modeling. Must have the ability to write, read, and implement technical procedures. Must be able to assist in documenting engineering processes, support multiple ongoing projects, and contribute to the setup, troubleshooting, and improvement of test systems.
Preferred:
All of the above plus:
· Experience with ISO 9001
· Proficiency machining and assembling test fixtures
· Proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks preferred) for fixture, complex assemblies, & machine design
· Experience designing validation systems
· Experience with pneumatics, load cells, solenoids, and sensors
· Familiarity in LabVIEW or similar data acquisition/control programming environments
· Experience building custom mechanical systems and integrating electromechanical components
· Experience designing validation systems in regulated or safety-critical industries
· Passion for the outdoors, climbing, hiking, and/or back country skiing/riding experience

Essential Functions:
Responsible and authorized to continuously improve upon and perform the following functions in accordance with BD’s Quality System, Safety and Employee Policy procedures and policies:
1. Support the design and prototyping of test fixtures and machines.
2. Fabricate, assemble, and integrate mechanical and automation components—including machined parts, pneumatic systems, and electrical wiring—into fully functional test machines.
3. Design and program LabVIEW-based data acquisition and control systems.
4. Collaborate with test engineers to define requirements for test infrastructure.
5. Drive continuous improvement in lab processes, efficiency, and equipment performance.
6. Create and maintain testing instructions, test equipment operating instructions and inspection documentation.
7. Responsible for helping to maintain Quality test lab, equipment & fixtures in a clean, neat and organized manner.
8. Responsible for conducting safety reviews of machines and implementing risk mitigation to ensure safe operation.
