What are the responsibilities and job description for the Paving Specialist position at Black Bear Paving?
Black Bear Paving has been paving western North Carolina since 1995. We handle driveways, private roads, subdivisions, and commercial lots across Franklin, Highlands, Cashiers, and the surrounding mountains. We're adding a dependable laborer to our paving crew.
This is hands-on outdoor work with a small crew, where you'll learn every part of the job and can move up to running equipment. Experience is a plus, but we'll train the right person who shows up on time and works hard.
What you'll do
- Shovel, rake, and lute hot-mix asphalt behind the paver
- Prep jobs: clean, sweep, and edge surfaces, set string lines, and apply tack
- Help with grading, gravel base, patching, and curb work
- Run hand tools and small equipment such as plate compactors, saws, and blowers
- Load, unload, and secure tools, materials, and equipment
- Set up cones and signs and help direct traffic around the work zone
- Clean and maintain tools, trucks, and equipment at the end of the day
- Follow safety rules and the foreman's direction on every job
What we're looking for
- Reliable, on time, and ready to work every day
- Able to lift 50 lbs repeatedly and stay on your feet all day
- Comfortable working outdoors in heat, cold, and around hot asphalt
- Dependable transportation to our shop in Franklin
- Works well on a crew and takes direction
- At least 18 years old and legally able to work in the U.S.
Nice to have
- Paving, grading, concrete, or general construction experience
- Experience on a roller, skid steer, or other equipment
- Valid driver's license (CDL a plus)
