  • Dates: September 21st-November 20th
    • Classroom/Lab: Weeks 1-5 
    • William J Harrison Education Center, 3140 Cass Ave, St. Louis, MO 63106 or St Louis Community College Forest Park, 5600 Oakland Ave, St. Louis, MO 63110
      • Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
    • Clinical Practice: Weeks 6-9
    • Barnes-Jewish Hospital, One Barnes-Jewish Hospital Plaza, St. Louis, MO 63110.
      • Three 12-hour shifts weekly as assigned 7am-7:30pm.
  • PLEASE NOTE:  CURRENT BJC EMPLOYEES MUST BE IN CURRENT POSITION FOR 3 MONTHS TO BE ELIGIBLE  
  • This 9-week accelerated training program combines classroom instruction, hands-on skill labs and on-the-job training in a clinical practice. The training satisfies the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services requirements for Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP). 
  • Program Highlights:
    • Individuals selected for the program will be employed as PCTs during training. 
    • *Tuition funding is provided by BJC HealthCare.  Minimum 1-year employment commitment to Barnes Jewish Hospital required upon completion.

Overview

Recognizing its excellence in nursing care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Acute Care Medicine manage patients with a full range of clinical issues-from significant blood dyscrasias, advanced endocrine pathology, heart and renal failure, GI conditions, infectious diseases, asthma, and a multitude of other conditions and diseases. Because of our patient acuity, we provide advanced training to bring new nurses to the highest level of functioning. Each unit is lead by a clinical manager and lead charge nurse. The unit is supported by an advanced practice nurse. Additionally each unit is assigned a case manager, social worker, physical therapist, dietitian, and pharmacist. This multidisciplinary team works in conjunction with the physicians, nurses, and patient care technicians to provide quality patient care.

Role Purpose

Provides direct patient care to support the licensed professional nurses responsible for a team of patients to ensure a safe environment for patients by reducing risk of harm. Collects vital information on the patient and reports such to the nursing team which contributes to the overall assessment of each patient and any changes to a patient's condition.

 

Responsibilities

  • Implements direct patient care under the supervision of the nurse, promoting patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Administers or assists patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), performs vital signs, intake & output, fall and pressure ulcer prevention measures, urinary catheter care, phlebotomy, or point of care testing as requested.
  • Collects clinical data and information on patients, and reports changes in patient status to the nurse.
  • Assists nurse with patient and family education. Documents all patient care activities provided with correct medical terminology. Acts as 1:1 patient safety sitter as necessary.
  • Ensures availability of supplies and equipment to meet each patient's needs.
  • Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development.
