Summary

The Director of Power & Electrical Planning leads long-range power planning and strategy for Bison’s upstream and midstream operations. This role partners across Facilities, Engineering, Drilling, Regulatory, Permitting, and Midstream Operations to forecast power needs, identify constraints, and ensure reliable power availability is incorporated into development plans.

Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions

• Lead long-range electrical power planning and forecasting for Bison’s upstream and midstream development activities.

• Partner with Facilities to incorporate power availability, infrastructure requirements, and lead times into development schedules.

• Work closely with Facilities, Engineering, Drilling, Regulatory, Permitting, and Midstream Operations to understand future electrical loads and infrastructure needs.

• Assess utility capacity and power availability across Bison’s operating areas, identifying potential constraints and excess capacity.

• Develop and maintain power forecasts by location, utility provider, and total company demand.

• Coordinate with utility providers on current and projected power needs, infrastructure plans, and opportunities to reduce project timelines.

• Evaluate when Bison would be better served by company-owned infrastructure, including power lines, substations, microgrids, or generation, rather than utility-provided solutions.

• Evaluate alternative power strategies in areas with limited utility capacity, considering operational needs, infrastructure constraints, air emissions, and development timing.

• Own and coordinate power connection requests for upcoming loads through completion.

• Collaborate with Drilling, Facilities, and Stampede Midstream Operations to forecast power requirements for upcoming development.

• Identify emerging power constraints, risks, and opportunities and communicate potential impacts to development and operational plans.

• Provide recommendations to leadership regarding long-term electrical infrastructure needs and power strategies.

• Support the preparation of expert testimony, technical exhibits, and regulatory responses related to power availability, electrification, grid constraints and alternative power solutions needed to support permitting of development assets.

• Evaluate emerging technologies and commercial opportunities related to power generation, energy storage, microgrids, distributed generation, power efficiency, demand management, utility incentives, tax credits, and other programs that could reduce cost or improve reliability.

• Work with Regulatory to develop and maintain strategic relationships with utilities, cooperatives, transmission providers, power developers, and regulatory agencies to improve visibility into system capacity, infrastructure expansion plans, interconnection timelines, and future power opportunities.

• Work with Regulatory to track power-related regulatory and utility policy changes and assess their potential operational, permitting, emissions, and economic impacts on the company's assets.

• Develop standardized power economics and decision-making tools that allow the company to compare alternatives based on capital cost, operating cost, reliability, emissions, schedule risk, and expected asset life.

Education & Experience (required):

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering, Energy, or a related technical field.

• 8 years of experience in electrical infrastructure, power planning, utility coordination, or related energy infrastructure.

• Experience with utility capacity planning, load forecasting, service requests, and electrical infrastructure development.

• Strong understanding of electrical distribution systems, substations, power lines, and generation.

• Demonstrated ability to lead complex, cross-functional initiatives.

Education & Experience (preferred):

• Experience supporting upstream and/or midstream oil and gas operations.

• Experience with utility providers in the DJ Basin or Rocky Mountain region.

• Experience evaluating microgrids, distributed generation, or company-owned electrical infrastructure.

• Familiarity with permitting and air emissions considerations related to power infrastructure.

Compensation

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $146,800 - $241,200 annually in this location. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amount listed above.

Location

This position is located Denver, Colorado. Candidates currently residing in locations outside of daily commuting distance will be considered, however, it is the expectation that the selected individual will be available at the work location. No relocation or travel assistance will be provided by the Company for this position. 

Work Environment

This position operates in an office environment. This entails working inside in an office space wherein employee may be provided a public work station (cubicle) or private office. From time to time, the role will require field visits where exposure to extreme weather conditions, fumes, airborne particles, vibrations, dust, electrical charges and other unforeseen exposures may be encountered. 

Physical Demands

In the performance of the duties and responsibilities of this job, the employee is required to have visual acuity to operate a motor vehicle and view a computer terminal for prolonged periods of time. While at work sites, the employee will be expected to walk and stand. Individuals might be asked to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and/or crawl. Individuals might be required to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs. in the performance of this position. 

Position Type and Working Hours

This is a full-time position. We operate on a 9/80 work schedule. Typical work hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on working Fridays. Employee must be capable and willing to work overtime as required and to participate in occasional meetings, events, seminars, conferences, or other activities outside of typical work hours. Employees responsible for project operations are expected to monitor and, in some cases, respond to emails, calls, or texts outside of business hours.

Travel

Occasional travel to work site locations may be expected. Overnight stays may be required from time to time for training, seminars, field visits, or visits to onsite locations.
