Part Time Health Services Nurse

This is a flexible, temporary, help-out nursing position primarily supporting Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health immunization services. The nurse will administer vaccines and provide related nursing services in the BBPH clinic and at mobile or community-based immunization clinics.

Work will be scheduled based on departmental needs, clinic schedules, community outreach activities, and employee availability. Hours will vary, generally ranging from approximately 4 to 16 hours per week, and a minimum or set number of hours is not guaranteed. Some evening or after-hours clinics may be scheduled to improve access for individuals who are unable to attend during regular business hours. This position is grant funded. The duration of employment and availability of hours will depend on continued grant funding, immunization program needs, and departmental priorities.

• Administers vaccines to children and adults in accordance with applicable laws, standing orders, clinical protocols, and standards of nursing practice.
• Reviews immunization histories and screens clients for vaccine eligibility, precautions, and contraindications.
• Provides clients and caregivers with vaccine information, education, and post-vaccination instructions.
• Prepares vaccines and maintains proper vaccine storage, handling, transport, temperature monitoring, and cold-chain requirements.
• Monitors clients following vaccination and responds to adverse reactions in accordance with established emergency protocols.
• Documents immunizations and related services accurately and promptly in required electronic health records, immunization information systems, and program records.
• Assists with vaccine inventory, supply management, data collection, and required program reporting.
• Assists with the setup, operation, and breakdown of mobile and community-based immunization clinics.
• Follows infection-prevention, medication-safety, confidentiality, and client-identification procedures.
• Communicates effectively with clients, families, BBPH staff, and community partners.
• Travels to community clinic locations and transports supplies as assigned.
• May assist with other public health nursing or emergency-response activities within the nurse’s training, licensure, and scope of practice.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing required.
• Possession of, or ability to readily obtain, a license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Dakota.
• Possession of, or ability to readily obtain, a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Dakota.
• Nursing experience sufficient to perform the essential duties of the position.
• Experience administering immunizations is preferred.

• Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States. The City of Bismarck does not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
• Knowledge of current immunization schedules, vaccine recommendations, and standards of care.
• Knowledge of vaccine storage, handling, transport, and cold-chain requirements.
• Knowledge of medication administration, infection prevention, and patient-safety practices.
• Skill in assessing clients for immunization eligibility, precautions, and contraindications.
• Skill in administering vaccines safely to individuals across the lifespan.
• Skill in recognizing and responding to adverse vaccine reactions.
• Skill in maintaining accurate clinical and program documentation.
• Skill in operating computers, electronic health records, and job-related software.
• Skill in communicating clearly and respectfully with clients, families, coworkers, and community partners.
• Ability to work effectively in both clinic and mobile community settings.
• Ability to work occasional daytime, evening, or after-hours clinics based on availability and departmental needs.
• Ability to travel to community locations and assist with transporting and setting up clinic supplies.
