What are the responsibilities and job description for the Horizontal Directional Drill Operator position at Bishop Fiber Solutions?
We are hiring an experienced Fiber Boring Drill Operator to support underground fiber optic installation using horizontal directional drilling (HDD). This role is responsible for safe, accurate bore execution, utility avoidance, and maintaining production goals in a fast-paced field environment.
Responsibilities
- Operate HDD equipment (Ditch Witch, or similar)
- Execute bore plans (depth, alignment, entry/exit points)
- Perform potholing and verify utilities prior to drilling (811 compliance)
- Communicate with locator and crew during drilling operations
- Monitor drilling fluids and manage returns
- Troubleshoot drilling issues (steering, obstructions, loss of returns)
- Maintain equipment and perform basic repairs
- Ensure jobsite safety, organization, and cleanliness
- Complete daily reports and production logs
Requirements
- 2 years of HDD / fiber boring experience preferred
- Ability to operate drill independently
- Strong understanding of underground utility avoidance
- Ability to read bore plans and construction drawings
- Valid driver’s license (CDL a plus)
- Ability to work outdoors in all conditions and perform physical labor
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Digitrak or similar tracking systems
- Mud mixing and drilling fluid management experience
- Mechanical troubleshooting skills
- Fiber installation experience (FTTH, backbone, municipal projects)

Work Schedule
