What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Assistant position at Birmingham Integrative Health?
- Arrives at 7:30 am ready to work before clinic opens (i.e. organize desk, have computer up and running, etc.…)
- Prepares patients for clinicians (MD/NP)
o takes information from patients regarding past medical/surgical/social history and records into patients chart
o measures and records vital signs such as temperature, respirations, pulse, BP, weight, height (for children)
o documents Chief Complaint in chart using as many details as possible
o updates current medications
o assigns patients to an exam room and moves the patient to the appropriate exam room in “tracking board” in the computer system.
o rooming patients and setting room up for exam (change table paper, confirm room clean and stocked)
o performing appropriate triage tests (i.e. UA, strep, HCG, mono, flu, EKGs, etc.)
- Answers telephone calls and messages before, during, and after morning and afternoon clinic, provides routine information to caller, and documents appropriate information regarding phone calls into the patient’s chart.
- Routes difficult questions to clinicians as soon as possible
- Assists clinicians with exams and minor surgeries
- Prepares treatment room, ensuring that all instruments and supplies are present
- Assists clinicians in therapeutic procedures such as dressing wounds
- Cleans and autoclaves instruments used in examinations and/or surgeries.
- Maintains clean and hygienic environment in rooms, triage area.
- Keeps exam rooms stocked daily
- Assists with discharge of patients
o Handing out printed prescriptions
o Reviewing medications, treatments, tests, referrals ordered by clinicians
o Administering injections ordered by clinician
- Schedules appointment for outside radiology, referrals or return visit for patients when appropriate.
- New inventory should be stocked in a timely manner
- Is respectful and uses courteous manners on the phone and in person to patients.
- Performs other job related duties as required or assigned
Physical Requirements
- Work is of medium demand, sitting and standing required
- Must be able to lift 40lbs, occasional lifting of patient with assistance
- Hearing to distinguish heartbeat and breathing of patients and to hear instructions
- Color vision to perceive changes in patients skin color or colors of medications or solutions
- Near visual acuity to observe changes in health/illness status of patients and to read gauges and dials on equipment
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $14.00 - $16.00 per hour
Expected hours: 25 – 40 per week
