JOB DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of the Technology Technician is to support teaching and learning in schools by installing and maintaining technology hardware, software, and networks. The Technology Technician also ensures that the daily needs of end users are being met so that they experience maximum availability of their respective hardware and software.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Must be able to assess, repair, and maintain computers, laptops, iPads, Chromebooks, interactive boards, and other technology peripherals within the Birmingham City Schools district.
- Expert knowledge and background in Microsoft Windows Operating Systems, System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), Windows 10 and 11, and iOS knowledge required.
- Must be able to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues, even when a clear solution is not immediately apparent; the ability to think critically, experiment, and apply a trial-and-error approach is essential.
- Must be self-directed, customer service-focused, and a team player.
- Must be able to ask questions and listen to customers in order to find out the issue, explain the problem in a clear and understandable way, and present solutions for repair to get the customer functioning as soon as possible.
- Must be able to use various diagnostic tools to assess, monitor, repair, and test computer systems.
- Must be knowledgeable in telecommunications cabling, networking systems, hardware, and software.
- Must maintain a valid AL driver’s license and ensure that the violations are kept to a minimum so that the applicant can meet the requirements of traveling to assigned schools.
- Keeps tools and supplies arranged in proper order; guards against misuse of all tools and materials; cleans and restores all tools to proper place after each use; recognizes and properly uses tools necessary in the performance of his duties; and reports any damaged or misplaced tools to supervisor.
- Accept any other assignment as deemed necessary by the Director of Information Technology.
- Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policies, and state and federal rules and regulations.
- Demonstrates professional ethics by consistently arriving on time, adhering to workplace policies and procedures, maintaining a positive and respectful attitude, and upholding confidentiality and integrity in all interactions with staff, students, and stakeholders.
- Actively pursues professional growth by completing a minimum of 12 hours of professional development annually and continuously obtaining relevant technical certifications as required for the role.
- Must be CompTIA A certified. If the applicant is not CompTIA A certified, the applicant must agree to obtain CompTIA A certification within two years of employment. If the applicant does not pass the exam within two years of employment, the applicant will be nonrenewed.
- Must be CompTIA Network certified. If the applicant is not CompTIA Network certified, the applicant must agree to obtain CompTIA Network certification within two years of employment. If the applicant does not pass the exam within two years of employment, the applicant will be nonrenewed.
- Apple repair certification preferred, but not required.
- Cisco CCNA certification preferred, but not required.
- Please note that the hours for the job will be primarily from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. with occasional overtime.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and experience as a computer technician.
- Prior experience with customer services or technical support is required.
- Three (3) years of experience in technical support.
- Must be able to drive a Board vehicle when needed. Must have a valid Alabama Driver’s License.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity are required to perform job responsibilities such as lifting and carrying desktops and switches, pulling cabling, etc.
