Bipartisan Policy Center
Washington, DC Full Time

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Major Gifts Officer position at Bipartisan Policy Center?

The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) and its advocacy affiliate, BPC Action, are unique in their approach to addressing the nation’s most pressing issues. As the only organization working across the full political spectrum on domestic issues, BPC brings together diverse perspectives to craft data-driven, pragmatic policy solutions. For nearly 20 years, we have consistently achieved results on complex issues, demonstrating that bipartisan cooperation is essential for lasting solutions.

Position Overview

BPC seeks a dynamic, relationship-driven Major Gifts Officer to join our development team during a pivotal era of growth. As BPC approaches its two-decade milestone, this role will play a central support function in executing a 20th Anniversary Campaign with an aggressive fundraising goal.

The Major Gifts Officer will partner closely with the Executive Vice President (EVP) and Vice President (VP) of External Relations to manage high-level donor logistics for the campaign while simultaneously building and managing a personal portfolio of individual prospects. This is a high-visibility role requiring exceptional organizational skills, political savvy, and the ability to translate complex policy into compelling cases for support.

Responsibilities

20th Anniversary Campaign Management (50%)

  • Executive Support: Serve as the primary project manager for the EVP and VP of External Relations regarding campaign activity, ensuring valid prospect pipelines and timely follow-through on solicitations.
  • Strategy & Logistics: Coordinate high-level campaign meetings and "salon dinner" events, managing invitations, logistics, and briefing materials for leadership.
  • Materials Development: Draft executive-level briefing memos, personalized proposals, and campaign impact reports that articulate BPC’s history and future vision.
  • Pipeline Tracking: Maintain the 20th Anniversary revenue pipeline in Salesforce, proactively tracking progress against aggressive fundraising goals and keeping leadership informed of deadlines and renewal opportunities.

Individual Giving & Portfolio Management (50%)

  • Solicitation: Manage a portfolio of individual donors and prospects, guiding them through the cycle of identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Prospect Research: Conduct research on prospective individual donors to identify alignment with BPC policy areas, including Human Capital, Health, Housing, Economics, and Energy, and Governance.
  • Stewardship: Oversee the creation and execution of stewardship strategies, including impact updates, periodic interactions and outreach, and invitations to exclusive briefings.
  • Campaign Appeals: Assist with drafting and tracking fundraising appeals and campaigns targeting major gifts, ensuring messaging aligns with BPC’s mission and current legislative successes.
  • Other Portfolio Support: Maintain flexibility to support other fundraising portfolios, such as corporate and foundations giving, as organizational needs arise.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5–7 years of fundraising experience, with a focus on major gifts, individual giving, or capital campaigns, preferably in a non-profit or policy setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement successful fundraising strategies.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple complex projects under pressure.
  • Superior writing and editing skills, with the ability to translate dense policy work (e.g., Commission recommendations) into persuasive donor communications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, including foundation and family offices, donors, and internal teams.  Infrequent travel may be required.
  • Knowledge and experience with fundraising databases (Salesforce preferred) and Microsoft Excel are required.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • A commitment to BPC’s bipartisan mission and the ability to interact effectively with high-level donors, Board members, and internal stakeholders.

BPC offers a highly competitive salary and provides generous benefits. Individuals interested in this position should send a resume, cover letter, and writing sample in one document. Incomplete applications will not be considered.  Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States. BPC does not sponsor employment visas.

BPC is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace dedicated to pursuing and hiring a diverse workforce.

Work Schedule

The work/life balance of employees is a priority for the Bipartisan Policy Center. As a result, BPC is currently operating on a hybrid schedule.  This position will be in office Tuesday-Thursday, and other days as needed to support the President and CEO. This position requires the ability to respond outside of normal working hours and on the weekends as it relates to calendar control, and travel changes.

BPC offers comprehensive health insurance benefits with a choice of CareFirst HSA, POS, or PPO plan.  Additional benefits include 403(b) matching contributions of up to 7% of salary in addition to a non-elective contribution of 2% of salary (both after 90 days of employment); 15 vacation days, 2 personal days, 15 sick days, and 12 holidays per year; education benefits up to $5,250 per year after one year of employment; $2,000 for professional development expenses after six months of employment; Metro benefits of up to $130 per month; Pet Insurance, Company provided life insurance; and dental and vision insurance coverage with a Flexible Spending Plan.
