Program Description

Within Leidos Biomedical Research Inc. (operator of the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research), the Clinical Research Directorate (CRD) provides clinical supervision of programs at the clinical end of the research spectrum. The quality assurance programs provide the required autonomy and transparency of Good Manufacturing Practice quality assurance operations. CRD also provides operational support for clinical research and supports clinical trials management, regulation, pharmacovigilance, and protocol development/protocol navigations. These support services include dedicated clinical research professionals who provide patient care to clinical trial participants at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center, and other research services that support the domestic and international clinical research initiatives of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), and several other institutes within NIH. CRD’s support services are strategically aligned with its mission to provide comprehensive, dedicated support to assist NIH researchers in providing the highest quality of clinical research in compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines, maintaining data integrity, protecting human subjects, and helping to advance scientific clinical research. CRD facilitates the conduct of NIH-sponsored clinical trials that investigate the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, influenza, HIV, infectious diseases and emerging health challenges like Ebola virus and COVID-19, parasitic infections, heart, lung and blood disorders, and rare and neglected diseases. CRD’s collaborative approach to clinical research support and the expertise and dedication of staff to the continuation and success of CRD’s mission has contributed to improving the overall standards of public health on a global scale.

The Clinical Research Directorate (CRD) provides comprehensive clinical support to NIAID (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease), providing clinical research to control and prevent diseases caused by infectious agents. This includes basic and applied research to develop and evaluate therapeutics, vaccines, and diagnostics.

Key Roles/Responsibilities

  • Provides direct pharmaceutical care, serving as a drug information and patient education resource and assisting with the monitoring of patients enrolled in research protocols of the Laboratory of Immunoregulation and Infectious Diseases (LIRID)
  • Provides comprehensive pharmaceutical support to in-patients and out-patients in a clinical research environment, demonstrating primary leadership and management of complex pharmaceutical tasks
  • Lectures and facilitates discussions with infectious diseases fellows, medical residents and nursing staff on topics such as HIV treatment and prevention
  • Serves as a liaison between clinic staff and the pharmacy department, as well as between researchers and the Investigational Drug Control Unit
  • Assists the Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee with formulary write-ups of new antiretroviral drugs and management of the antiretroviral formulary
  • Assists with the activities of the Health and Human Services (HHS) Antiretroviral Treatment Guidelines and participates as a non-voting observer to the Guidelines Panel
  • Ability to function independently and/or collaboratively within a team setting
  • Highly effective problem solving, planning and organization skills
  • Ability to manage complex research programs in a large institutional setting
  • This position is located on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus located in Bethesda, Maryland


Basic Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited college or university recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • In addition to education requirements, a minimum of one (1) year clinical experience with post-graduate training and/or experience in HIV or other applicable research or clinical care
  • Current professional license (from any state in the U.S.) to practice pharmacy
  • Knowledge of clinical research concepts, ethics, processes and protocol implementation and management for pharmaceutical in/outpatient drug therapies
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance


Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Completion of a residency program
  • Teaching experience and committee involvement
  • Experience in clinical guideline development, formulary management and with pharmacy databases
  • Experience in the development and/or execution of clinical research protocols as an associate investigator
  • Working knowledge of clinical information systems

The salary range posted is a full-time equivalent salary and will vary depending on scheduled hours for part time positions
