Position Summary

The Grossing Technologist performs accurate gross examination, description, and dissection of surgical pathology specimens in accordance with pathologist protocols, departmental SOPs, and applicable regulatory standards. This is a temporary, on-site assignment supporting the Anatomic Pathology laboratory at our Elmwood Park, New Jersey facility.

Position Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Receive, accession, and verify surgical specimens; confirm patient and specimen identification
• Perform gross description and dissection of routine and designated complex specimens per established protocols
• Select representative sections, submit cassettes, and prepare specimens for processing
• Dictate or enter complete, accurate gross descriptions in the laboratory information system
• Photograph or diagram specimens when required
• Assist with frozen section support as assigned
• Maintain specimen integrity, chain of custody, and proper fixation
• Perform and document equipment maintenance and workstation quality checks
• Monitor pending work, resolve discrepancies, and escalate unusual or complex cases to a Pathologists’ Assistant or pathologist
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe grossing environment, including proper handling of chemicals, sharps, and biohazardous material
• Follow all laboratory, safety, and compliance policies and procedures
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology / Medical Laboratory Science, Histotechnology, Biology, Chemistry, or a related life science
• Must meet CLIA requirements for personnel performing high-complexity testing
• Ability to pass a visual discrimination / color vision assessment
• Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy in a production laboratory setting

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior grossing experience in a hospital or reference laboratory
• ASCP HTL, HT, MLS/MT, or Pathologists’ Assistant (PA) certification
• Experience with GI, derm, prostate, breast, and other high-volume specimen types
• Familiarity with an anatomic pathology LIS

Schedule / Assignment

• On-site at Elmwood Park, NJ
• Temporary assignment; shift and expected duration to be confirmed at offer
• Must be available for the assigned shift, including possible evenings, nights, or weekends based on department need

Work Environment / Physical Demands

• Anatomic pathology grossing room with exposure to biological specimens, formalin and other chemicals, sharps, and standard laboratory hazards; PPE required
• Medium work: lifting up to 50 pounds and/or carrying objects up to 25 pounds; pushing/pulling as needed
• Requires standing for extended periods, fine motor skills, and close visual work
