DNA Analyst

Experienced DNA Analyst opportunity at BioPet Laboratories preparing, extracting, and analyzing DNA for genotyping. Join our growing team in our new two-story laboratory!

BioPet Laboratories, accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standards, is a privately-owned biotechnology laboratory in Knoxville, TN specializing in animal genetics. BioPet Lab’s growing commercial tests encompass canine proof of parentage and identity testing, and PooPrints® testing for pet waste management. PooPrints® is a forensic testing application leveraging molecular biology innovations to mitigate environmental impacts of dog waste.

The position will include laboratory work preparing samples, extracting genomic DNA, amplifying, and analyzing amplicons from various biological animal samples. Accurate and comprehensive documentation of all processes in QA systems is required. Sources of DNA for extraction and isolation will include buccal swabs, blood, tissue, and fecal samples.

Training will lead to amplicon detection with capillary electrophoresis and library prep for sequencing. Additional training may lead to interpreting STR and SNP sequencing data.

In the lab, an analyst will also perform routine maintenance, daily cleaning, quality control checks of equipment, be familiar with Microsoft Excel, and possess the ability to meet demands and timelines of a high through-put commercial lab.

The analyst will be expected to work well in a team environment with BioPet Lab’s current laboratory staff and other professionals, report directly to the Lab Director, and have a willingness to self-motivate.

A full-time employee will work Monday through Friday with a flexible schedule option once on-site training is complete.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's in Science required with preference to degrees in Biology, Chemistry, or Genetics; coursework to include labs in molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, and biochemistry.
• Experience in genomic DNA isolation from biological samples, reagent preparation, precise pipetting technique
• Conduct High throughput and manual DNA extractions with precision
• Attention to detail and focus to maintain sample ID sequences during methods are imperative.
• Must be comfortable troubleshooting DNA isolation methods and QC deviations.
• Frequent communication and collaboration with fellow analysts and Lab Director.

Preferred skills:

• Experience performing PCR
• Experience in a high-throughput commercial lab
• Experience in genotyping with GeneMapper software
• Methodology and instrumentation for STR fragment analysis through capillary electrophoresis.
