Systems Engineer II

Summary

This individual will be responsible for supporting Bionano’s instrument systems. You will interact with engineers and scientists from various disciplines, as well as directly with the support organization and some customers. You will use your disciplined systems engineering approach to help identify optimized solutions and effectively communicate those to your peers and to management, including senior management. This is a full-time position located in our San Diego headquarters. This is primarily an on-site position, with significant time spent in the engineering and science labs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with a broader technical team, help identify areas of impactful improvement in the design, manufacturing and deployment of Bionano’s instruments (20%)
  • Plan and execute systems engineering verification testing (15%)
  • Assist and understand the requirements and specifications for instrument systems (15%)
  • Assist manufacturing in qualifying instruments received from Bionano’s OEM partners (15%)
  • Assist the global support organization in deploying and supporting instruments (15%)
  • Contribute to the development of documentation packages to submit to regulatory bodies (15%)
  • Other duties as assigned (5%)

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Exceptional technical troubleshooting skills, and an analytical approach to problem solving
  • A good understanding of electro-mechanical systems and an aptitude to learn new systems
  • Strong communications skills; oral, written, electronic and presentation
  • Strong statistics skills, and the ability to applyit to problem solving
  • Must be flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven ability to understand customer needs and create requirements and specifications to meet those needs. Work with others to properly flow those specifications through to subsystems

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  • Familiarity with optical systems
  • Board level PCBA troubleshooting
  • Familiarity reading electrical schematics
  • Familiarity with using electrical multimeters, light power meters, and general lab instrumentation
  • Familiarity with formal reliability engineering concepts
  • Familiarity with DFMEA and PFMEA analyses
  • Ability to create and propose design ideas

Education, Certifications, Licenses

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in engineering or science. Electrical Engineering degree is a plus.
  • At least 3 years’ experience required in a technically challenging environment

Additional Requirements

  • Work Location: San Diego – onsite 
  • Travel Requirements:
  • 10% of travel time expected 
  • Domestic travel primarily with some international travel
  • Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
  • Sit and stand for prolonged periods 
  • Repeating motions that may include the hands, wrists and/or fingers 
  • Use of hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms
  • Stand and/or move about the office or in various environments (including tight and confined spaces), or from one worksite to another
  • Specific visual abilities, including close vision and ability to adjust focus, read, review, and assess the accuracy and thoroughness of the work assigned
  • Verbal abilities require communicating with others to exchange information
  • Occasionally adjusting or moving objects up to 50 pounds in all directions
  • Work environment involving low/high temperatures; hazardous conditions, low ventilation, noisy environments, small/enclosed spaces
  • In-person interaction with others indoors and outdoors
  • Use standard computer, telephone and related equipment for communication, and recordkeeping
  • Able to travel, including international travel, without personal assistance
