Description
BioMADE is working to change the United States' bioindustrial innovation ecosystem by creating a network of pilot and intermediate scale facilities so that U. S. innovators can scale, and ultimately produce, bioindustrial products domestically. This position will be responsible for ensuring that this once-in-a-generation opportunity to create and operate biomanufacturing piloting infrastructure, enabled by President Biden's Executive Order and focused through the Department of Defense's Manufacturing Innovation Institutes ), will set our nation on course to have resilient and secure supply chains for the chemicals and materials originating from renewable feedstocks.
As the EHS Manager, you will develop and lead an EHS program that delivers effective and efficient safety and environmental programs for the Maple Grove site while setting the standard for all Pilot Plant Network (PPN) sites. The EHS Manager will be a role model for safety leadership driving a strong safety culture while engaging and empowering employees. Working in collaboration with BioMADE's operations, maintenance, quality, logistics, and administrative teams at Maple Grove, the EHS Manager will deliver and facilitate robust safety programs that address the key SIFs. The EHS Manager will manage compliance with Federal and state OSHA and environmental regulations.
The Minnesota piloting facility is currently in engineering and design with construction to start in early 2026. This position will bring real world experience in operating a production or piloting facility for commissioning, start up and normal operations, applying that experience at BioMADE's Maple Grove location. The EHS Manager has direct responsibility and provides direction for EHS activities at the Maple Grove facility while supporting EHS activities at other BioMADE piloting facilities as required.
Key Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for the overall performance of EHS for BioMADE's Maple Grove facility, working with site leadership as a united front to drive a strong "zero harm" safety culture.
- Develop and deploy world class safety and environmental stewardship programs, policies, and standards (along with supporting permits) for Maple Grove that would apply to all facilities in the pilot plant network. Conduct and facilitate training on environmental and safety programs.
- Develop EHS skills and ownership across team at the Maple Grove site.
- Develop and audit safety policies for hazardous chemical handling, operations, maintenance, emergency response plans, industrial hygiene, and hazardous waste management.
- Drive high quality incident investigations and root cause analysis program, working with Maple Grove team to ensure timely resolution to corrective/preventive actions.
- Monitor accident rates, near miss rates, audit findings, safety data, and exposure modification ratings, working with Maple Grove leadership to develop improvement plans.
- Facilitate Process Hazard Analyses and ensure PSM compliance for Maple Grove process operations. Utilize HAZOP methodologies outside the PSM boundary where appropriate.
- Collaborate with the capital project team to improve, address, and advocate safety during engineering design phase of the project using the safety hierarchy of controls for Maple Grove projects.
- Ensure and enable Maple Grove site complies with federal, state, and county regulations for a biomanufacturing piloting facility, including hazardous waste management.
- Ensure high quality pre-startup safety reviews for new projects and equipment at Maple Grove.
- Develop and execute an EHS budgetary plan in collaboration with all departments (Operations, Maintenance, Quality Control, Logistics).
- Provide EHS recommendations to site leaders at other BioMADE piloting facilities.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
BS or advanced degree in Environmental Science, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related discipline with substantial industrial experience.
7 years of progressive experience in EHS positions in industrial settings.
- Must possess a Certified Safety Professional designation.
- Must possess OSHA-30 certification.
- Prior experience in a piloting or manufacturing facility to meet regulatory requirements, including OSHA (federal and state), EPA (and state Departments of Environmental Quality) and other government regulatory agencies.
- Must possess and cultivate the highest levels of safety awareness.
- Demonstrated history of actively engaging operations, maintenance, quality, and logistics personnel to become owners of safety programs. Demonstrated history of coaching and developing safety leaders.
- The ability to be self-directed and work independently under tight deadlines is required. Must be motivated and able to work hands-on in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Excellent organizational and detailed planning skills required.
- Working knowledge of process control and automation is desired.
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and have experience within the Microsoft Office environment.
- Must possess the ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
Hybrid Work Statement
BioMADE offers flexible (hybrid) work options based on business roles and needs. Employees are expected to work 3 days in the office environment and 2 days remotely.
- During the construction phase of the pilot facility, this position may be hybrid. As the Maple Grove facility approaches start-up, the EHS Manager position will transition from the BioMADE Minneapolis office to the Maple Grove site.
