Binghamton University is seeking a student-focused and motivated professional to be the next Senior Academic Advisor, Pre-Law Advisor. With an impressive 86% acceptance rate to law school, Binghamton University's Pre-Law Advising is recognized for delivering personalized advising, innovative programming, and strong partnerships across campus and beyond. Housed within Harpur Academic Advising, this position will lead robust pre-law advising initiatives to support students' academic and professional goals while advancing the University's commitment to student success.

The Senior Academic Advisor will meet with undergraduate students and recent alumni interested in attending law school or pursuing legal careers, providing expert guidance on academic preparation, application strategy, and professional development. This position works closely with faculty, advisors, and staff in a busy, collaborative environment to ensure students have access to robust resources and opportunities. Responsibilities of the Senior Academic Advisor, Pre-Law Advising are as follows:

Advising responsibilities:

  • Provide individualized advising on personal statements, law school selection, and application timelines.
  • Provide information on the curricular and co-curricular opportunities required to develop the skills and experiences required for success in law school
  • Assist pre-law students and alums with the law school application process, including personal statements, letters of recommendation, LSATs, etc.
  • Provide support and offer relevant resources for underrepresented students
  • Advise on the financial aspects of law school, including costs and income expectations
  • Provide general academic advising to pre-law students, if appropriate
  • Serve as the departmental liaison to specific Harpur College departments

Creating connections:

  • Connect with pre-law student groups and faculty
  • Coordinate communication with the Harpur Law Council and other alumni in the legal field. Participate in Harpur Law Council meetings several times per year, some which are held in New York City.
  • Maintain and promote a network of faculty, attorneys and law students as advising resources
  • Connect with pre-law advisors and law school admissions representatives
  • Create and lead the BU pre-law advisory council, made up of faculty, advisors, students and other campus personnel connected with law school advising and career readiness.
  • Participate in the Northeast Association of Pre-Law Advisors (NAPLA)

Programming:

  • Coordinate the annual campus Law Day with the Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development
  • Coordinate pre-law activities on campus, including speakers, outreach, training sessions
  • Attend and assist with the coordination of the Current Issues in Legal Practice three-day winter course, held in New York City
  • Participate in new student orientation and admissions events

Administration:

  • Collect law school admission data and prepare an annual pre-law report
  • Write dean's letters and process bar statements
  • Review and award pre-law scholarships

Supervision:

  • In addition to the primary duties, the pre-law advisor may supervise academic advisors working with typical pre-law majors.

The successful candidate will be highly organized, self-disciplined, and able to work independently and as a part of a team. Occasional evening and weekend programming is expected, with occasional travel to New York City.


Job Requirements:

  • Master's Degree (or higher)
  • At least 3 years of experience in higher education or legal setting
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including students, faculty, alumni, and external partners
  • Knowledge and understanding of college student development and the college student population
  • Experience planning, organizing, and delivering workshops, fairs, or other large-scale events

Preferred:

  • Understanding of graduate admissions processes, especially law school admissions processes, personal statement development, LSAT preparation, and best practices for advising pre-law students
  • Experience with data collection and reporting to assess program effectiveness
