Overview
Responsible for the accurate inspection and grading of green hardwood lumber according to NHLA grading rules, with an emphasis on quality assurance.
This position also oversees the accurate sorting, stacking, and compiling of load quantities prior to customer shipment.
Responsibilities
- Inspect green hardwood lumber using NHLA and proprietary grading rules and standards.
- Make quick decisions relevant to color, quality, board footage & pricing
- Manually and accurately indicate grade and trim markings on each board.
- Maintain accuracy while keeping pace with sawmill production rates.
- Monitor product quality and communicate with machine stations to ensure a consistent flow of quality product.
- Oversee the accurate sorting, stacking, and compiling of load quantities.
- Maintain lumber tally system (load set up, load closing, relaying of completed load info to shipping).
- Review grading reports to ensure that customer specifications (length, grade, quality, etc.) are being met.
- Assist with basic PM at grading, trimming, and stacking stations as time permits.
- Cross train on other machine centers within the operation.
- Perform all duties with safety as top priority.
Skills
- NHLA grading certificate (preferred)
- 3–5 years lumber grading experience (preferred)
- Quick/Confident decision‑making skills
- Specific vision abilities: close and distance, color
- Species identification in both logs and lumber
- Able to read/use grading stick
- Basic computer skills
- High School diploma / GED (preferred)
- Strong math skills
- Proven leadership experience and ability
- Good judgement
- Strong work ethic
- Safety oriented
- Able to stand and walk 8–10 hours per day on hard surface
- Able to reach with hands and arms, talk and hear
- Able to stoop, twist, bend, and kneel
- Able to repeatedly pull, move 50 pounds (occasional lift)
- Able to work in all weather conditions (indoor facility, but weather impacts internal temp)
- Valid PA driver’s license
