- Directly supervise and evaluate assigned transportation staff, including the Transportation Coordinators and Bus Aide Supervisors.
- Assist in the recruitment, training, and evaluation of transportation employees.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and accountability to ensure productivity, quality, and customer service standards are met.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of student bus routes and schedules using routing software.
- Review, revise, and approve regular and special education bus routes for safety, efficiency, and compliance.
- Coordinate with the Transportation Director and contractor on routing options and service adjustments.
- Coordinate with City/County Planning to determine future busing needs.
- Assist in planning and organizing transportation for early outs, field trips, extracurricular events, bus evacuations, and K–1 bus safety classes.
- Work with schools, staff, and families to resolve transportation-related issues, ensuring excellent customer service.
- Serve as a liaison between the Transportation Coordinator, transportation staff, and the Transportation Director to maintain effective communication.
- Serve as a liaison between the district and contracted transportation provider to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Support the Director in ensuring compliance with state and federal transportation regulations.
- Compile and submit accurate reports and records, including those required by the Office of Public Instruction (OPI).
- Maintain historical records.
- Maintain transportation safety records in conjunction with the contracted transportation provider.
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives by leveraging technology and data analytics.
- Develop and recommend operational changes to improve efficiency, safety, on-time performance, and service quality.
- Serve student transportation needs in support of the Graduate Profile.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned to support the goals of the Transportation Department and Billings School District 02.

The Transportation Manager supports the Executive Director of Transportation in the daily management and coordination of student transportation services. This role ensures the efficient operation of routing, scheduling, and staff supervision for the safe transport of 4,000 regular and special education bus riders. The Manager works collaboratively with district leaders, schools, contractors, and families to maintain safe, cost-effective, and customer-focused transportation services.
The “ideal” candidate will be detail-oriented, organized, and able to lead a team with integrity, accountability, and professionalism. Strong communication skills, the ability to problem-solve using data, and a focus on continuous improvement are essential.
In the absence of the Executive Director of Transportation, the Transportation Manager assumes leadership of department operations, ensuring continuity of service, decision-making, and communication with district leadership and contractors.
