Utilizing their background in law enforcement, the officer will work to foster a culture of regular school attendance through proactive engagement with students, families, school staff, and community agencies. This role requires a collaborative and compassionate approach to addressing attendance-related issues while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with school principals and designees on student attendance and welfare matters
- Conduct home visits and conferences with students and families to address attendance issues and identify barriers.
- Work with teachers, counselors, and other school personnel to develop and support attendance improvement plans.
- Refer students and families to appropriate agencies, including counseling, family support services, and alternative education programs.
- Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and outside agencies including law enforcement, child welfare services, and mental health providers.
- Provide guidance to families on legal procedures and consequences related to truancy and chronic absenteeism.
- Participate in staff development and training related to attendance laws, procedures, and best practices.
- Investigate and validate student absences; ensure accuracy and legitimacy of excuse notes.
- Prepare and maintain required reports and documentation related to attendance compliance.
- Support and supervise attendance office personnel as needed.
- Monitor attendance records and trends; ensure accurate data entry and reporting.
- Enforce district attendance boundaries and assist with residency verification as needed. • Support campus safety and assist with supervision during school hours as directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by district or site administration.
- Law enforcement background: Retired peace officer with verifiable experience.
- POST Certification: Current certification or eligibility under state POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training).
- Experience working with youth and families, especially in educational or community settings.
- Knowledge of state, district, and federal laws regarding school attendance, truancy, and child welfare.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups and de-escalate conflict when necessary.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy, cultural awareness, and professionalism.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for home visits and off-site meetings.
- Background clearance and fingerprinting as required by district and state policy.
- Ability to work flexible hours when needed, including occasional evenings for parent meetings or community outreach.
