Reports To: Director of Visual & Performing Arts / Building PrincipalsPosition OverviewThe Billerica Public Schools is seeking a dynamic, visionary, and highly organized Director of Instrumental Music to lead a comprehensive 4-12 band program. This unique vertical position requires a versatile educator capable of inspiring beginners in the 4th grade, retaining and mentoring middle schoolers, and cultivating an elite, high-performing culture at the high school level. The successful candidate will be the face of the Billerica Band program, fostering a lifelong love of music while maintaining high standards of performance and community engagement.Key ResponsibilitiesElementary Level (Grade 4): The FoundationRecruitment & Enrollment: Conduct instrument demonstrations and parent information nights to launch the 4th-grade beginning band program.Instruction: Provide small-group instrumental lessons and initial ensemble rehearsals, focusing on fundamental technique, literacy, and tone production.Assessment: Evaluate student progress to ensure proper instrument fit and early success.Middle School Level (Grades 5-7): Retention & GrowthCollaborative Teaching: Assist current middle school staff in ensemble rehearsals and sectional coaching.Bridge Building: Actively recruit students transitioning from elementary to middle school to ensure high retention rates.Pedagogy: Continue development of intermediate technical skills and introduction to diverse band literature.High School Level (Grades 8-12): Excellence & LeadershipEnsemble Direction: Direct the High School Concert Band and/or Wind Ensemble, focusing on advanced repertoire, expressive conducting, and collegiate-level preparation.Marching Band Direction: Serve as the head director for the Billerica High School Marching Band. This includes: Designing/selecting field shows.Directing all rehearsals (including summer camp).Leading the ensemble at all home football games, regional exhibitions/competitions.Program Building: Develop a "robust" program culture through student leadership opportunities, chamber music, and community performances.Provide other related duties that the Principal and/or Director of Visual & Performing Arts may assign.Additional DutiesAdministrative Management: Manage the instrumental budget, maintain an inventory of school-owned instruments, and oversee the repair/maintenance schedule.Communication: Maintain regular, professional communication with the "Billerica Friends of Music" organization, parents, and school administration.Curriculum Development: Align the 4-12 instrumental curriculum with National and State Arts Standards.Travel: Coordinate logistics for festivals, away performances, and potential overnight performance trips.QualificationsCertification: Valid Massachusetts DESE License in Music: Instrumental (PreK-12).Education: Bachelors degree in Music Education required; Masters degree preferred.Experience: * Proven track record of success in building or maintaining a robust marching band program.Strong pedagogical knowledge of all woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments.Experience in student recruitment and community relations.Skills: Exceptional classroom management, conducting technique, and the ability to inspire students across a wide developmental range (ages 9-18).Physical Requirements & ScheduleMust be able to move musical equipment and stand for extended periods during rehearsals and performances.Note: This position requires significant evening and weekend commitments, particularly during the fall marching season and spring concert/festival season.The Billerica Advantage: We are looking for an educator who doesn't just teach "band," but builds a community.
