Position Summary
The Mechanical Foreman is responsible for supervising and coordinating mechanical construction, welding, pipeline maintenance, slip repair, coating, painting, and abrasive blasting activities on assigned projects or facilities. This role oversees field personnel, ensures work is completed safely and efficiently, maintains quality standards, and supports project schedules and productivity goals. The Mechanical Foreman is also responsible for ensuring all welding procedures, pipeline integrity work, and repair activities comply with applicable codes, specifications, and company standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and lead mechanical, welding, and pipeline maintenance crews on daily operations and project activities.
- Coordinate installation, maintenance, repair, slip repair, welding, coating, painting, and abrasive blasting operations.
- Oversee pipeline repair and maintenance activities including pipe replacement, leak repair, tie-ins, hot taps, flange work, and slip repair procedures.
- Ensure all welding activities are performed in accordance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and applicable industry codes and standards.
- Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, isometric drawings, coating data sheets, welding procedures, P&IDs, and technical drawings.
- Plan daily work assignments and ensure labor, tools, equipment, consumables, and materials are available.
- Monitor welding quality, fit-up, alignment, preheat/interpass temperatures, and material traceability requirements.
- Ensure all surface preparation and coating applications meet project specifications and quality standards.
- Monitor environmental conditions for blasting and coating activities including temperature, humidity, and surface profile requirements.
- Enforce company safety policies, OSHA regulations, environmental compliance standards, and pipeline safety procedures at all times.
- Conduct job site inspections to verify workmanship, weld quality, coating thickness, surface preparation, and equipment performance.
- Coordinate hydrotesting, pressure testing, and inspection activities as required for pipeline systems.
- Train, mentor, and evaluate field personnel, welders, apprentices, and labor crews.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, welding, pipeline, and coating-related issues and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Maintain accurate records including daily reports, weld logs, inspection logs, production tracking, maintenance documentation, and timekeeping.
- Coordinate with subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, utility representatives, and other trades to maintain workflow efficiency.
- Participate in project meetings and assist with scheduling, manpower planning, material forecasting, and outage coordination.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school training preferred.
- 5 years of experience in mechanical construction, industrial maintenance, welding, pipeline maintenance, coating, painting, or abrasive blasting operations required.
- Prior supervisory or foreman experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, piping, pumps, motors, industrial equipment, and pipeline systems.
- Working knowledge of welding processes including SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, and FCAW preferred.
- Working knowledge of industrial coating systems, surface preparation standards, and painting applications.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, isometric drawings, welding procedures, coating specifications, P&IDs, and technical documents.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficient in the use of hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, blasting equipment, spray equipment, and inspection instruments. Valid driver’s license may be required.
- OSHA certification, SSPC/NACE certifications, welding certifications, or other industry certifications preferred.
Required Skills & Experience
Welding & Pipeline Maintenance Skills
- Knowledge of welding processes including SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, and FCAW applications.
- Experience with pipeline construction, maintenance, tie-ins, hot taps, slip repairs, and piping system repairs.
- Ability to interpret Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), isometric drawings, and piping specifications.
- Understanding of weld inspection requirements, preheat/interpass controls, weld discontinuities, and repair procedures.
- Familiarity with pipeline integrity procedures, pressure testing, and maintenance documentation.
- Knowledge of piping materials, valve installations, flange make-up, and mechanical repair techniques.
Coating & Painting Skills
- Knowledge of industrial coatings, primers, epoxies, urethanes, zinc systems, and specialty coatings.
- Experience with airless spray systems, conventional spray equipment, brush and roller application methods.
- Understanding of coating cure times, dry film thickness (DFT), wet film thickness (WFT), and adhesion requirements.
- Ability to interpret coating manufacturer specifications and inspection requirements.
- Familiarity with quality control procedures for coating applications.
Abrasive Blasting Skills
- Experience with abrasive blasting equipment and surface preparation techniques.
- Knowledge of SSPC/NACE surface preparation standards including blast profiles and cleanliness requirements.
- Ability to inspect surfaces for contamination, profile depth, and coating readiness.
- Understanding of containment, ventilation, and environmental controls for blasting operations.
- Familiarity with blast media selection and equipment maintenance.
Safety & Compliance Skills
- Strong understanding of OSHA safety standards and PPE requirements for mechanical, welding, painting, blasting, and pipeline operations.
- Knowledge of confined space entry, respiratory protection, fall protection, lockout/tagout, line breaking, and hazardous material handling.
- Ability to conduct safety meetings, toolbox talks, and job hazard analyses (JHAs).
- Understanding of pipeline safety regulations, permit requirements, and safe work practices for energized or pressurized systems.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments, including varying weather conditions.
- Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces, trenches, and around industrial or pipeline equipment.
- Ability to wear respirators, welding PPE, protective suits, and other required protective equipment for extended periods.
