What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nutrition Coach position at Bill Wilson Center?
The full-time Nutrition Coach for transitional housing and emergency shelter programs works directly with youth ages 12-24 years old, acting as a “coach” to support with healthy, balanced eating, food budgeting, and meal planning. The Nutrition Coach will work with youth both individually and in group sessions/workshops, conducting educational and/or cooking activities, organize wellness activities for the youth, and assess youth’s progress in these areas. The Nutrition Coach will play a vital role in educating and empowering teens and young adults to make healthy lifestyle choices and develop lifelong habits that promote well-being. The Nutrition Coach will have primary responsibility for educating, advising, and guiding youth to support them in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct individual nutrition assessments with clients at our transitional housing and shelter programs
- Facilitate and lead building nutrition coaching curriculum within the programs, and maintaining program fidelity
- Develop personalized plans tailored to the unique needs and goals of each youth, upholding medical recommendations
- Provide ongoing individualized support and guidance to teens and young adults to help them implement and maintain healthy eating habits
- Monitor progress and make adjustments to nutrition plans as needed
- Plan and facilitate group sessions/workshops on nutrition, healthy eating, cooking workshops, appropriate budgeting, and overall wellness for youth
- Create engaging and interactive activities to educate youth about the importance of nutrition and how to make healthy food choices on a budget
- Foster a supportive and inclusive environment where youth feel comfortable sharing their experiences and learning from one another
- Develop educational materials and resources on nutrition and wellness topics relevant to teens and young adults
- Collaborate with other staff (case managers, life skills coaches, shelter cooks, and/or residential counselors) to support the youth in their progress, outlined in the Needs & Service Plans
- Participate in community outreach events to raise awareness about the importance of nutrition and healthy living for youth
- Provide nutrition support to parenting youth; identifying barriers, providing education/workshops, connecting to resources, etc.
- Attend house meetings to develop rapport with the youth and promote upcoming sessions
- Maintain accurate documentation of nutrition assessments, coaching sessions, and group facilitation activities
- Prepare regular reports on program outcomes and participant progress for internal and external review
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines governing nutrition services and confidentiality
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related field. Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential preferred. 3 years of experience working with teens and/or young adults in a counseling or educational setting, focusing on skills building, nutrition, and/or healthy living. Strong knowledge of nutrition principles, dietary guidelines, and meal planning & budgeting. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Must be punctual, efficient and organized; effective and professional under pressure. Ability to balance excellent client care with meeting deadlines and ensuring positive program goals and outcomes. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team. Compassionate, non-judgmental approach to working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, with experience providing services to clients of various racial, ethnic, socioeconomic backgrounds, and sexual identity who are overrepresented in homeless populations as well as working in different cultural environments. An understanding of humility and respect for working with homeless youth and families. Excellent communication skills - must be personable and informative when presenting BWC programs and services. Valid California driver's license with access to a personal vehicle, Fingerprint/background check and TB test required.
