Position Summary
Big Sky Land Management is seeking a skilled Fleet Technician to perform maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a variety of vehicles and small construction equipment, primarily Caterpillar, in both field and shop environments. This role supports the operational needs of the business by ensuring equipment is safe, functional, and well-maintained.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, test, and repair vehicles and small construction equipment, including small diesel engines, water pumps, and similar machinery.
- Operate equipment as necessary to accurately identify and resolve mechanical issues.
- Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, brake repairs, and hydraulic system checks.
- Use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment to identify and resolve problems efficiently.
- Read and interpret schematics and OEM manuals to ensure proper repair procedures.
- Determine the extent of damage or wear and identify appropriate corrective actions.
- Assess parts for failure cause and potential reusability.
- Perform minor welding, fabrication, electrical repairs, and related tasks.
- Work in a variety of environments, including outdoor and field settings.
- Maintain accurate service and repair records for all equipment.
- Prioritize repairs based on operational needs and establish reasonable completion timelines.
- Maintain a clean, well-organized, and properly equipped service truck.
- Communicate openly with the Service Manager and complete other duties as assigned.
- Participate in available service training opportunities to enhance skills and support continuing education.
- Contribute to a positive, collaborative work environment.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 3 years of experience working as a mechanic in a dealership or service environment.
- Minimum 3 years of experience repairing vehicles and/or small equipment.
- Strong mechanical knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, air brakes, alignment, hydraulics, suspension systems, and HVAC systems.
- Demonstrated troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Reliable, honest, and committed to high work standards.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- A two- or four-year technical degree related to the vehicles or diesel engines is preferred, but not required
- A valid CDL A, or willingess to obtain within 30 day of employment
- Interest in gaining additional hands-on experience with heavy equipment maintenance.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods and perform frequent walking, climbing (ladders and stairs), reaching, pulling, leaning, and twisting.
- Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including outdoor and field settings.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
