Position Summary
The Log Scaler is responsible for accurately measuring, grading, and evaluating incoming logs to determine volume, quality, and value according to industry standards and mill specifications. This position ensures that logs meet required criteria for production and helps maintain accurate inventory records for the sawmill.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Inspect, measure, and scale logs using approved tools and techniques.
- Apply industry log-scaling rules to determine volume and grade.
- Record log data accurately into manual or electronic tracking systems.
- Mark logs for identification, grade, and processing category.
- Identify defects, species, and quality that impact log value or usability.
- Communicate with log truck drivers, procurement staff, and yard personnel regarding load quality and discrepancies.
- Assist with verifying weights, counts, and delivered loads.
- Monitor and maintain proper scaling station equipment and tools.
- Follow all mill safety protocols and report any unsafe conditions immediately.
- Support log yard operations as needed
- Guide Residual Haulers with kiosk as needed
- Ensure compliance with company policies and industry standards.
Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Basic math skills and the ability to interpret measurements.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform job duties involving walking, bending, climbing, and standing for extended periods.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Preferred:
- Previous experience as a log scaler, grader, or related sawmill/log yard role.
- Familiarity with log-scaling rules
- Experience using handheld electronic scaling devices or log-sorting software.
