Big Bend Hospice (BBH) is your “Hometown Hospice” providing compassionate end-of-life care for over 40 years to the Big Bend region. Guided by our values of integrity, respect, and excellence, we are seeking an experienced Spiritual Care Counselor to join our team PRN.

The ideal candidate will excel in providing spiritual counseling and emotional support to hospice patients, guided by the patients' and families’ personal belief systems, spirituality, or philosophies of life, while maintaining a neutral and compassionate presence. As a Spiritual Care Counselor, it is essential to empower, actively support, and encourage meaningful connections in ways that are comfortable and familiar to the patient and family throughout their hospice experience.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:  
The Spiritual Care Counselor, PRN  responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following: 

• The Spiritual Care Counselor responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following: 
• Assess and identify the spiritual and emotional needs of patients and families through individualized care planning.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive spiritual care plans aligned with patient goals and regulatory compliance.
• Conduct life reviews, provide education on the dying process, and reinforce end-of-life care plans.
• Assist with Advance Directives upon request.
• Provide or coordinate sacramental ministry and spiritual rites before and after death, based on patient/family wishes. 
• Facilitate contact with outside clergy, support persons, or faith communities as needed, and document interactions and follow-ups in the EMR.
• Build and maintain supportive spiritual relationships with patients and families through effective communication and supervisory visits.
• Officiate or coordinate funeral, memorial, and related services upon request for the families/patients of 7 Oaks Healthcare/Big Bend Hospice as requested.
• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to address spiritual, cultural, ethical, and grief-related concerns.
• Document all assessments, interventions, and outcomes in spiritual care records and required forms, ensuring accuracy and completeness. 
• Perform additional duties as assigned

Work Schedule:  

• PRN schedule- Guaranteed a minimum of 35-40 hours a month.
• Monday through Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
• Rotating Holidays and Weekends

This position includes travel in the following Florida counties:

• Bay
• Jackson
• Calhoun
• Gulf
• Holmes
• Washington
• Gadsden
• Liberty
• Other counties as assigned

Skills & Qualifications

Education & Experience:

• Master’s Degree from an accredited Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) institution, seminary, or theological school in a context relevant to spiritual counseling/chaplaincy/pastoral care, such as divinity, theology, psychology, counseling, family systems, world religions, thanatology.  
• Completion of at least 1 unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is required. Preference will be given to candidates with 4 units of CPE; however, clinical experience in a hospice setting may be considered as a substitute for the CPE requirement.
• Two or more years of clinical pastoral support experience and/or hospice clinical spiritual support experience. Hospice preferred.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
• Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
• Ability to work effectively with culturally, religiously, and spiritually diverse groups and healthcare systems.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, work independently, and delegate tasks when appropriate.
• Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
• Thorough knowledge of end-of-life and spiritual care guidelines and regulations.
• Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s EMR and HR/payroll software, Word and Excel.

Requirements: 

• Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and reliable transportation. 
• 1 unit of CPE Clinical Pastoral Education
