Big Bend Hospice (BBH) is your “Hometown Hospice” providing compassionate end-of-life care for over 40 years to the Big Bend region. Guided by our values of integrity, respect, and excellence, we are seeking an experienced Admissions Registered Nurse to join our team.
The ideal candidate is an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) with strong presentation and public speaking skills. Our Admissions Registered Nurse will meet with patients and families to present hospice services and hospice philosophy. You will be equipped with the knowledge needed to answer any questions regarding hospice benefits, care, processes, and next steps. Upon gaining consent you will evaluate the patient and present your findings to the hospice Physician to determine eligibility for hospice services. Once eligibility is determined, you will perform the initial assessment. This position requires you to travel directly to patients' homes and health care facilities, where you must be adaptable, and remain calm in a stressful situation.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
The Admissions Registered Nurse (RN) responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:
- Evaluates patient/family for BBH admission, using approved criteria and procedures.
- Coordinates with other discipline re: services and medical equipment/supply companies to meet patient care needs in a timely manner. Also coordinates care of patients with various disciplines and community resources, both internal and external in a fiscally responsible manner.
- Provides information regarding available community resources to patient/families and other referral sources when BBH care may not be appropriate.
- Utilizes appropriate resources to maintain knowledge and skills for the hospice care in all settings including regulatory/reimbursement guidelines and integrates into clinical practice.
- Completes and submits documentation within agency timeliness policies that is complete, legible, and clearly reflects care given.
- Provides routine nursing assistance as requested by the Admissions Manager or RN Hospital Liaison.
- Reports unsafe environments/practices to supervisor in a timely manner.
- Participates in required weekend and holiday coverage or other nursing coverage as requested.
- Adheres to all Agency, State, and Federal policies and procedures, laws, and regulations which are relevant to job responsibilities.
- Adheres to all current Company policies and procedures.
- Portrays a positive attitude towards the Agency by supporting its mission, vision, values, policies and procedures.
- Provides appropriate and consistent feedback to referral sources, physicians, and patient/families.
- Maintains regular contact with discharge planners, social workers, hospitals, nursing homes and other referral sources to facilitate the referral process.
- Works cooperatively with Admissions, Education and Community Relations Departments to develop and maintain an efficient intake program to meet the needs of the community.
- Accepts responsibility and is accountable for nursing actions demonstrates an understanding of the legal consequences of nursing actions; requests supervision when needed; performs within the guidelines established by the Florida Nurse Practice Act.
- Performs other duties as requested.
Work Schedule:
- Schedule: Wednesday-Saturday, 4 days per week
- Hours: 10-hour shifts, 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM (includes 1-hour mandatory lunch break)
- On-Call: Weekend on-call shift rotation required
- Holidays: Participation in holiday rotation required
Travel Requirement: You must have a reliable vehicle and be willing to be dispatched throughout our service areas.

- Gadsden
- Liberty
- Madison
- Leon
- Wakulla
- Jefferson
- Franklin
- Taylor
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- Must have an active Florida RN License
- Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in nursing where physical assessment skills were enhanced.
- Hospice experience is a plus
- EMR experience required
Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to physically access any home in the service area, i.e., navigate stairs, narrow spaces, lack of air conditioning and heat, etc.
- Ability to remain calm and troubleshoot/handle patient/family crisis situations.
- Highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and effectively.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software including an EMR system.
