Position Overview
The Education Specialist plays a central role in advancing the Bicycle Coalition of Maine’s mission to make Maine a safer, more accessible place to bike and walk. This position leads and delivers high-quality bicycle and pedestrian safety education programming for youth and adults, with a primary geographic focus on southern and western Maine (Waterville and south/west).
The Education Specialist manages incoming education requests, builds and maintains relationships with schools and community partners, coordinates and supports BCM’s educator network, tracks program outcomes, and contributes to the continuous improvement and growth of BCM’s education initiatives.
This role combines hands-on instruction, program coordination, relationship management, and data tracking in a dynamic and community-centered environment.
1. Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Education
- Deliver in-classroom and on-bike educational programming for youth and adults
- Lead bike rodeos, educational rides, and basic on-road and off-road skills instruction
- Provide pedestrian safety education where appropriate
- Adapt programming to meet the needs of diverse audiences, including youth, families, municipalities, and community organizations
- Represent BCM professionally in schools, community settings, and public events
2. Program Coordination & Regional Management
- Serve as BCM’s primary education contact for southern and western Maine
- Manage incoming program requests and coordinate scheduling with schools and community partners
- Liaise with instructors and volunteers to ensure successful program delivery
- Track participation numbers, demographics, and outcomes to support reporting and grant requirements
- Identify opportunities for program expansion and strategic partnerships
3. Bicycle Education Instructor Program Support
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and engagement of BCM bike/ped educators
- Ensure instructors have access to appropriate training, resources, and materials
- Help coordinate instructor communications and professional development opportunities
- Support quality control and consistency across BCM’s statewide education programming
4. Program Development & Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to development and refinement of education curriculum and materials
- Assist in creating resources for in-person and digital education programming
- Provide feedback and recommendations for improving program impact and reach
- Support integration of BCM education efforts with broader organizational initiatives
- Experience teaching or facilitating educational programming for youth and/or adults
- Demonstrated knowledge of bicycle and pedestrian safety principles
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Self-motivated and comfortable working independently
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
- Willingness to travel throughout Maine, primarily in the southern and western regions
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
- League Cycling Instructor (LCI), PMBIA, ICP, or similar instructional certifications
- Experience leading on-bike instruction or group rides
- Experience working with schools or youth-serving organizations
- Experience tracking program data and outcomes
- Ability to lift and transport equipment (bikes, cones, materials)
- Lift 50 pounds
- Ability to ride a bicycle and demonstrate skills safely
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to drive vehicle with 15ft trailer
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
