The Biological Patent Searcher and Information Analyst conducts patent, scientific, business and other IP-related searches for patent attorneys relating to new biological entities (NBEs) and associated platforms. Presents deliverables succinctly to patent attorneys to enable IP legal assessments to support decision-making within the R& D, commercial, and business process. Proactively provides patent alerts with context, synopsis and analysis of real-time events that impact strategic decision-making. Implements processes for providing effective and efficient delivery of information products and services to patent attorneys and other key stakeholders.

This role is based out of our Ridgefield, CT location with a flexible hybrid onsite work schedule 2-3 days per week and as needed to support the business.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute strategies to localize, search, acquire and prepare NBE scientific and patent relevant data from internal and external data sources
  • Analyze the acquired data and support our patent attorneys as they support R&D, including prior art searches, patentability searches and freedom to operate (FTO) patent searches.
  • Set up patent watches and patent monitoring activities and maintain access to searching databases. Evaluate, select, and where necessary develop technologies and systems to ensure a further progression of the information services.
  • Present the acquired information as basis for relevant business decisions. Serve as the internal scientific contact person for the business area of biochemical, molecular biological and biosequence search and analysis.
  • Interfaces with Global Patent Information Services, Global Patents/Legal Services, R&D,competitive intelligence search specialists, and other key business partners.
  • Collaborates successfully with cross-functional teams to support multi-faceted projects.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or Immunology, or related scientific discipline with 3-5 industry experience is required; Master’s degree or PhD degree with course specialization in computer science, biology, bioinformatics, protein engineering is highly desirable.
  • Must have patent and database searching experience using at least two of the following databases: Derwent, Patbase, STN, Patsnap, Genome quest, and/or IP rally in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical/healthcare industry
  • Fundamental, knowledge of current information technology, search tools and databases in the biological and/or pharmaceutical fields as it relates specifically to pharmaceutical patents is highly desirable.
  • A working understanding of AI/MLL based searching and analytics as it relates to search platforms and the patent field specifically is highly desirable
  • General intellectual curiosity with a passion for uncovering information, the desire to transform the information into insight with the ability to communicate the relevance of that insight
  • Experience in sequence retrieval in online databases and in performing and analyzing sequence homology searches is preferred.
  • Knowledge in R&D relevant areas and in patent law in the field of pharmaceuticals would be a plus
  • Very good analytical skills with the ability to quickly review, analyze and synthesize technical informationwith attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize workload and respond quickly.
  • Autonomous, flexible, goal- and strategy-oriented ability.
  • Works effectively under pressure. Takes ownership of results.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present ideas, conceptualized approaches, as well as key results and findings, in a way that clearly relays information/knowledge in a concise format.

    • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
    • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required)
    • Must be 18 years of age or older
