What are the responsibilities and job description for the Survey Technician position at BHC?
The Survey Technician works with various members of the surveying project team to deliver on time and accurate survey projects. Working cooperatively in a project team setting in both field and office, responsibilities will support mostly local projects, but there may also be short-term travel field assignments. This position is regularly scheduled for 40 hours per week and will have overtime as needed

Qualifications:Essential Functions
Field
- Operate and utilize all survey equipment – GPS and conventional in the performance of boundary, ALTA, topographic and engineering surveys
- Work from notes, sketches, maps and other material to complete survey tasks with a minimum of supervision
- Utilize technology on boundary, ALTA, topographic and engineering surveys
- Communicate with the project surveyor before, during and after completion of field work to properly relay information on field conditions on-site
- Communicate with the client, when needed, to ensure satisfaction with work performed and to overcome obstacles in the performance of field duties
- Responsible for clear, informative and accurate field notes
- Take responsibility for the maintenance, repair and welfare of all equipment in the field including the work vehicle
- Brings field shots into CAD to process codes and line work prior to delivery to the survey drafting technician
Office
- Works from surveyor field notes, sketches, maps, photos and other material to develop deliverables for boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS surveys, and private development and municipal projects under supervision
- Work to be able to set up file structures to manage CAD drawing production in accordance with BHC standards
- Understand CAD requirements for a given project based on client or BHC standards
- Demonstrate an aptitude for CAD software tools for scaling, coordinate grids, reference files, dimensioning, blocks/cell manipulation and 3D modeling
- Produce spreadsheets when necessary for managing data and importing into the CAD files
- Uses knowledge to work independently. However, uses good judgement in seeking help/answers to questions from Project Supervisor when necessary
Position Requirements
Experience
- 0 years survey experience
- Demonstrated interest in continuing education (ex. Certified Survey Technician)
- A valid driver's license must be maintained and insurable
- Physical working requirements:
- Ability to do occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
- Able to walk up/down stairs
- Subject to outside environmental conditions occasionally
Skills
- Must develop proficiency with data collectors and total stations (conventional and robotic)
- Must understand algebra, trigonometry, and geometry
Education
- A high school diploma or equivalent required
- Geospatial industry education a plus
