What are the responsibilities and job description for the Gift Officer position at BEYOND HOUSING INC?
Position Summary::
What if your next career move could help shape the future of an entire region?
Beyond Housing is seeking a Gift Officer who can build meaningful relationships, inspire investment, and help secure the resources needed to create a stronger, more prosperous St. Louis region for all.
This role is about more than fundraising. It is about connecting people who want to make a difference with a bold vision that can create lasting change.
Beyond Housing is a nationally recognized community development organization working to strengthen families and transform under-resourced communities. Our work is comprehensive, ambitious, and deeply rooted in the belief that meaningful change requires more than isolated programs — it requires coordinated effort, strong relationships, and sustained investment.
As Gift Officer, you will help inspire that investment.
This is a high-expectation role for a proven relationship builder. The right candidate will bring both a relationship-first mindset and a business development discipline — someone who can create consistent activity, open doors, build trust, communicate a complex value proposition, and secure meaningful commitments that advance lasting change in St. Louis.
The ideal candidate may come from fundraising, sales, banking, business development, account management, financial services, relationship management, or another relationship-driven profession. What matters most is the ability to build trust, hold high-quality conversations, manage a disciplined pipeline, and achieve goals.
Success in this role requires consistent activity, strong follow-through, thoughtful relationship development, and the ability to turn conversations into meaningful commitments.
What You’ll Do:
The Gift Officer will manage a portfolio of donors and prospects and move relationships through discovery, cultivation, solicitation, closing, and stewardship.
Key responsibilities include:
- Serve as the primary relationship manager for a portfolio of up to 150 donors and prospects.
- Build and manage a disciplined pipeline of donor and prospect relationships.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and close major gifts that generate meaningful philanthropic revenue.
- Lead consultative, value-based conversations with donors and prospects to understand their interests, motivations, and capacity.
- Translate Beyond Housing’s comprehensive community development work into a clear, compelling case for support.
- Develop customized giving opportunities that align donor interests with organizational priorities.
- Work closely with senior leaders, board members, staff, and volunteers to identify and engage new prospects.
- Prepare prospects for timely and appropriate solicitations based on relationship stage, capacity, and interest
- Partner with the Development Manager and supervisor to develop donor research, briefing materials, proposals, and stewardship communications.
- Cultivate and expand planned giving opportunities with new and existing donors in collaboration with the Development Manager and supervisor.
- Track all donor and prospect activity in Raiser’s Edge® or the organization’s donor management system.
- Stay current on Beyond Housing’s priorities, programs, strategic initiatives, financial needs, and community impact.
- Represent Beyond Housing with professionalism, urgency, discretion, and integrity.
What Success Looks Like:
This is a performance-oriented role. Success will be measured by both activity and results.
The Gift Officer will be expected to:
- Maintain a high level of weekly and monthly outreach, meetings, follow-ups, proposals, and solicitations.
- Build and advance a healthy portfolio of qualified donors and prospects.
- Consistently move relationships through the pipeline from discovery to commitment.
- Secure meaningful gifts that support Beyond Housing’s mission and strategic priorities.
- Meet or exceed individual fundraising and activity goals.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete CRM documentation.
- Build strong internal relationships with colleagues, leadership, board members, and volunteers.
- Represent Beyond Housing as a nationally recognized, high-impact nonprofit organization working to create transformational change in St. Louis.
Who We’re Looking For:
This is not an entry-level role. We are seeking a proven professional who has demonstrated success building relationships, creating opportunities, and securing commitments.
This role may be especially appealing to someone who has built a successful career in professional fundraising, sales, banking, business development, account management, financial services, community engagement, or another relationship-driven profession and is now looking for work with greater purpose and measurable impact.
Prior fundraising experience is valuable, but it is not the only path to success in this role. Candidates with strong experience in relationship development, consultative sales, business development, account management, banking, financial services, or portfolio management are encouraged to apply.
We are looking for someone who has:
- A genuine passion for Beyond Housing’s mission and vision.
- A high level of personal drive, discipline, and goal orientation.
- A proven ability to build relationships and earn trust.
- The confidence to engage donors, business leaders, board members, civic leaders, and community stakeholders in meaningful conversations.
- Experience communicating complex ideas in a clear, compelling, and persuasive way.
- A track record of securing commitments, closing opportunities, or advancing high-value relationships.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple relationships and priorities at once.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfort being measured against goals and held accountable for activity, pipeline movement, and results.
- The maturity, judgment, and professionalism to represent a premier nonprofit organization in high-level conversations.
Most importantly, we are looking for someone who believes their career can be about more than making a living. It can be about making a lasting difference.
Required Qualifications:
- Five or more years of professional experience in fundraising, sales, corporate partnerships, business development, account management, relationship management, banking, financial services, or a related field.
- Demonstrated success building relationships, managing a portfolio, creating opportunities, and closing commitments.
- Strong comfort with goals, performance metrics, pipeline management, and accountability.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to explain complex ideas clearly and persuasively.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust with donors, prospects, board members, volunteers, staff, and community partners.
- High level of professionalism, discretion, persistence, and follow-through.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for donor meetings, events, and community activities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in major gifts, corporate philanthropy, planned giving, nonprofit development, corporate partnerships, or donor stewardship.
- Experience using Raiser’s Edge®, Salesforce, HubSpot, or another CRM system.
- Experience working with senior leaders, board members, business owners, executives, donors, or high-net-worth individuals.
- Experience developing proposals, briefing materials, presentations, or customized relationship strategies.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
