                                    Job Title: Assistant Equestrian Program Manager

 

Department: Equestrian Center

Reports to: Equestrian Program Manager

Staff Supervised: Equestrian Staff/Volunteers

FLSA Status: Full-time/Non-Exempt

 

Job Summary: Responsible to ensure effective functioning of overall Equestrian Program including delivery of programming and active treatment to individuals receiving services.  Responsible for expansion and development of Equestrian Program including increasing participation of riders and volunteers and increasing ability of the program to become financially self sufficient. Grant writing and assistance in event planning for the benefit of the Equestrian Program.

 

Job Duties:

 

A.    Participant Safety

  • Ensure a clean and safe training environment is provided for all participants.
  • Ensure completion of daily checks of program area to ensure cleanliness, maintenance and safety of the areas.
  • Ensure acquisition and maintenance of first aid kits for participants, staff and horses.
  • Ensure development, implementation and monitoring of all emergency procedures.
  • Ensure all safety procedures are followed as specified in program procedures.
  • Ensure that fire and disaster drills are completed and turned in according to policies.
  • Report all cases of alleged individual abuse or neglect to the proper personnel as outlined in policy and procedures.

 

B.     Program Coordination and Evaluation

  • Coordinate volunteer training, scheduling and recruiting.
  • Participate in public relations activities as scheduled
  • Organize and implement Community Riding Program.
  • Develop revenue producing activities that significantly off set program costs
  • Obtain grants for the Equestrian Program to increase financial stability of the program.
  • Assist in coordination of therapeutic riding and grooming teams.
  • Assist in selection and distribution of appropriate horses and equipment for equestrian programs.
  • Establish rapport with participant's guardian and family members and the community.
  • Consult with OT/PT Dept. in program development activities as appropriate. 

 

 

 

 

C.     Participant Care:

  • Supervise therapeutic and recreational equestrian programs
  • Assist in the supervision and instruction of participants inside and outside the Equestrian Program as needed.
  • Ensure acquisition of supplies needed to properly provide equestrian programs
  • Ensure sufficient volunteers/staff are available to safely conduct programs.

 

D.    Supervision

  • Assist in hiring of appropriate staff with Supervisor's approval.
  • Demonstrate to staff what is expected and give feedback on how well they approximate the demonstration.  Implement staff training or appropriate support strategies to remediate inadequate staff performance.  Engage in activities consistent with increasing staff's morale.
  • Perform duties consistent with improving the quality of habilitation activities and increasing the training opportunities for participants. 
  • Provide performance feedback to individual staff regarding the quality of programming being provided.
  • Establish and monitor daily work schedules and routines for assigned staff to ensure adequate supervision at all times.
  • Approve vacations, personal days and early work releases for employees assigned.  Arrange for program staff coverage when necessary.
  • Assist in evaluating employees in program area at least annually.  Ensure that counseling and disciplinary actions necessary for any incidents that occur are completed per policy. 
  • Chair/attend Equestrian staff meetings routinely.

 

E.     Horse and Stable Care

  • Ensure all care of horses, stable and arena grounds is completed
  • Ensure monitoring of animal care on a daily basis.
  • Provide Veterinarian and farrier care to animals on a timely basis
  • Develop and obtain adaptive mounting equipment and procedures as needed. 
  • Revise and update stable management work handbook, as needed.
  • Supervise maintenance of arena and immediate grounds.

 

F.     All Other Duties as Assigned

  • Completion of additional duties may be required to meet the needs of individuals receiving services.

 

 

 

 

Qualifications:

Education/Qualifications:

    • PATH registered instructor or ability to attain such    certification, CHA level I certification or ability to attain such certification.
    • College Degree in appropriate field preferred.
    • Five to seven years experience working with horses and large animals.
    • Must have sufficient physical stamina and mobility for lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling. Ability to lift 100 pounds at times.
    • Thorough working knowledge of appropriate horse selection, care and first aid/veterinarian needs required.
    • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form.
    • Excellent organizational skills.
    • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred.
    • Two to three years stable management required.
    • Must have a positive outgoing attitude, be a self-starter and self-motivated.
    • Must be able to supervise and train all staff in a responsible manner.
    • Must possess excellent organizational skills and be able to make mature decisions regarding program matters at any given time.
    • Must be willing to undertake any additional training required for position.
