Behavioral Health Technician Job Description
The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) at Better Way of Miami’s Navigation Center plays a vital role in supporting individuals experiencing homelessness in a low-barrier environment, with a focus on person-centered and trauma-informed care. The BHT will provide direct support to clients who may have behavioral health challenges, including mental health and substance use issues, by assisting with intakes and discharges, overseeing daily activities, facilitating access to resources, and ensuring a safe and supportive environment. Working alongside other staff, the BHT will help assist with basic needs that prioritize client dignity, autonomy, and well-being.
Education Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience Requirements: At least 1 year of experience in a behavioral health, social services, or similar role, preferably within homeless services. Experience working with individuals who have substance use disorders, mental health challenges, and/or trauma histories is strongly preferred.
Licensure/Certification: Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record. Completion of a Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) or similar certification program is preferred.
Skills/Abilities: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and engage with clients from diverse backgrounds. Ability to manage and de-escalate crises in a calm, professional manner. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for documenting client interactions and reporting progress. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, collaborating with other staff to meet client needs. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and occasionally lift or carry materials or supplies. Ability to manage and respond to crisis situations that may require physical presence or support. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, or holidays, as needed, depending on the center’s needs.
Supervision Provided to Position: Supervision is provided by the Program Director.
Performance/Proficiency Standards: Performance standards are integrated within the position responsibilities. The principle functions of the position identified shall not be considered as a complete description of all the work requirements and expectations that may be inherent in the position.
Description of Duties:
· Provide day-to-day support to residents, assisting with tasks such as monitoring behavior, managing daily routines, and ensuring a safe environment.
· Build strong, empathetic, and non-judgmental relationships with clients, based on respect and trust.
· Assist clients in developing coping skills and strategies for managing behavioral health symptoms, including mental health and substance use issues.
· Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating healthy behaviors, coping strategies, and emotional regulation.
· Assist with intakes and discharges in a respectful and courteous manner.
· Respond to behavioral health crises or emergencies in a calm, compassionate, and effective manner, using de-escalation techniques to minimize conflict and in collaboration with other staff as needed.
· Provide immediate support to clients in distress, ensuring that their needs are met and safety is maintained.
· Make sure sleeping areas are tidy, free of clutter, not a fire hazard or blocking access.
· Teach and assist clients with proper use of laundry machines, including sorting, washing, and drying personal clothing and linens. Respectfully remove client belongings that are left in the machines unattended.
· Provide instruction on maintaining personal hygiene, including cleaning up after themselves in common areas and bathrooms.
· Educate clients on proper bed-making and maintaining a clean and organized sleeping area.
· Reinforce positive habits related to cleanliness, self-care, and respect for shared spaces.
· Assist in washing and changing linens as needed.
· Support general cleaning and sanitation of the facility to maintain health and safety standards.
· Monitor cleanliness of communal areas and provide reminders or support to clients to uphold facility guidelines.
· Communicate any maintenance or sanitation concerns to supervisory staff promptly.
· Observe and document client behaviors and well-being, including any signs of distress, changes in mental health status, or risk behaviors related to substance use.
· Maintain accurate and confidential client records, including progress notes, behavioral health assessments, and incident reports, in compliance with policies and confidentiality standards.
· Report any changes in client behavior or health to the appropriate staff.
· Work as part of an interdisciplinary team, collaborating with case managers, peer support specialists, intake coordinators, security, and other community partners to provide holistic care for clients.
· Participate in regular team meetings to discuss client needs, challenges, and progress toward goals.
· Provide input on policies and practices to improve the overall well-being of clients and the community.
· Accurately document interactions, observations, and activities related to clients, ensuring compliance with documentation standards and confidentiality regulations.
· Track and report client progress, needs, and any behavioral concerns to the appropriate team members.
· Monitor all areas of the center with a focus on client safety and well-being.
· Other duties as assigned.
