As BBB’s key contact for media, businesses, consumers, and advisory board members in the media markets for the Cape Girardeau, Missouri and Effingham, Illinois regions, the regional director:
- Develops relationships and communicates with media contacts, businesses, consumers to increase awareness of BBB’s mission and use of its services
- Implements localized programs
- Reports to the Director of Communications and Marketing

Primary duties and responsibilities
Address substandard marketplace behavior and encourage best business practices by educating consumers and businesses through news media.
- Works to increase brand awareness of BBB in the Cape Girardeau and Effingham regions by creating radio, TV and newsprint opportunities (including co-op advertising) and ensures a constant flow of BBB media coverage, consumer education and business development.
- Appears on local news stations (television and radio) to discuss consumer tips and alerts.
- Provides news coverage and monthly BBB columns for newspapers in Cape Girardeau and Effingham regions.
- Coordinates with St. Louis office on content and distribution of local press releases, blogs, website landing page, e-newsletters, social media, etc.
- Refers investigations and ad review cases in cooperation with BBB Director of Marketplace Solutions.
- Tallies and reports media appearances, speeches, and events attended on behalf of BBB.
- Gives presentations to community groups to increase awareness of BBB mission and services.
- Works with BBB’s communication director to introduce BBB’s ethics training program for students to local high schools.
Create a community of trustworthy businesses and charities and celebrate marketplace role models.
- Contributes to outreach by regularly attending and speaking at business organization meetings in the region including local Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Clubs and economic development groups.
- Plans, organizes and implements programs and events in the Cape Girardeau area that enhance the image and mission of the BBB such as business mixers, seminars, speeches/webinars and TORCH Awards.
- Represents BBB as needed at meetings and functions in the Cape Girardeau and Effingham regions.
- May collaborate with area universities for mission-driven projects.
- Involves local BBB Accredited Businesses in BBB’s work by:
- Coordinating and attending quarterly BBB Advisory Board meetings
- Identifying future leaders to serve on BBB Advisory Board and other collaborative partnerships.
- Actively looking for new ways to involve local BBB Accredited Businesses in BBB’s work.
Assist with revenue generation for the Cape Girardeau and Effingham regions.
Ensures regional goal achievement for:
- New BBB Accreditations, including meetings with prospects to review benefits, when applicable, and referring sales leads to sales representatives
- Annual retention, including visits to business to review benefits, when applicable.
- Develops Accredited Business leads and assists with sales strategies for BBB sales staff.
Experience, skills and abilities
- Ability to network with businesses
- Familiarity with standard business practices
- Clear, succinct and professional written and verbal communication
- Effective listening and public speaking skills
- Experience in working with media, including on air/camera experience
- Highly organized with the ability to set priorities to accomplish work objectives
- 4-year college degree required
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365
