About the Role
The BBB is seeking an ethical and detail-oriented Part-Time Investigator to protect our community by researching potential fraudulent activities and unethical business practices. Your work will drive public awareness, media exposure, and potential legal interventions that help safeguard our community.
Key Responsibilities and Deliverables
The primary goal of this position is to produce 3 to 5 high-quality investigative reports per month that are suitable for public use and referral.
- In-Depth Investigations: Conduct thorough, unbiased investigations into consumer- and business-directed scams, problematic business types, and complex marketplace complaints of all varieties.
- Actionable Reporting: Prepare detailed, professional reports that summarize findings. These reports will be used to create press releases, social media content, and alerts to law enforcement/regulatory agencies.
- Evidence Gathering: Utilize advanced online research techniques, public records, and communication methods to gather, verify, and document facts about business operations, ownership, and fraudulent patterns.
- Complaint Evaluation: Review and analyze a high volume of consumer complaints to identify emerging trends, systemic issues, and potential targets for deeper investigation.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the VP of Operations to prioritize cases that have the highest potential for public impact.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of related professional experience in a field such as law enforcement, regulatory compliance, corporate investigation, consumer protection, or specialized research journalism.
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
- Communication: Exceptional written communication skills with proven ability to produce clear, concise, and professional documents suitable for media/public release.
- Integrity: Demonstrated commitment to ethical practices and maintaining confidentiality throughout all investigations.
- Technical Proficiency: Strong proficiency in advanced online research techniques (OSINT), utilization of public records databases (e.g., Secretary of State filings), and general computer applications.
Work Environment
This position is based in Broadview Heights, Ohio. While training will be conducted in-office to ensure a successful start, a hybrid schedule with some work-from-home flexibility is available once the investigator demonstrates autonomy and proficiency.
