The Inpatient Central Pharmacy Operations Supervisor is a working supervisory role responsible for supporting the daily operational performance of the central pharmacy under the direction of the Pharmacy Operations Managers and Director of Pharmacy Operations.

This position provides direct supervision of central pharmacy pharmacists and shared oversight of pharmacy technicians, interns, and students in coordination with the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor and Pharmacy Technician Manager. The supervisor supports workflow optimization, regulatory compliance, staff development, and safe medication distribution practices across central pharmacy operations.

The supervisor is expected to maintain competency to staff central pharmacy operational areas, including sterile products areas, and serve as an operational resource and escalation point during routine and high-acuity situations. This is a working supervisor position primarily scheduled on first shift. The supervisor is expected to maintain operational competency across all central pharmacy shifts and provide staffing or operational support on second or third shift as needed to support safe pharmacy operations.

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Practices pharmacy and maintains credentials in accordance with laws, rules and regulation of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, Department of Public Health, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and Drug Enforcement Administration and in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures.

2. Oversees daily operations and workflow coordination within the central pharmacies, including order processing, sterile and non-sterile compounding, controlled substance handling, and general distributive tasks for medications.

3. Directly supervises the activities of pharmacists and participates in the supervision of pharmacy technicians, interns, and students within central pharmacy spaces, ensuring that staff are supported and accountable.

4. Maintains a staffing component of responsibilities as a working supervisor, able to staff all areas of the central pharmacy as needed including central pharmacist and sterile products pharmacist tasks.

5. Responsible for performance evaluations; staff training and onboarding; disciplinary matters and other related personnel oversight duties.

6. Participates in recruiting efforts.

7. Responsible for scheduling activities, vacation/leave approvals, and timecard/payroll activities.

8. Audits compliance and readiness with regulatory and accreditation bodies; Joint Commission, CMS, DPH, QOPI, USP <797>, USP <795>, USP <800>.

9. May precept pharmacy student and resident rotations as well as resident-led quality improvement projects.

10. Promotes a culture of patient safety by submitting medication related events and near misses.

11. Participates in the investigation of medication errors and supports the implementation of corrective actions as needed.

12. Upholds a culture of respect and teamwork across the Pharmacy Department.

13. Promotes positive relations and actively contributes to a supportive work environment. Fosters a team environment within the department and effective inter-disciplinary collaboration.

14. Participates in on-call responsibilities and rotation on behalf of the department.

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in pharmacy required.

2. Massachusetts Pharmacist License required.

3. 3 years related pharmacist practice experience required, including at least 1 year in an inpatient pharmacy setting.

4. Demonstrated interpersonal and management skills necessary to educate and supervise staff. Independent thinker with good judgment and constant triaging ability.

5. Ability to handle non-routine tasks.

6. Ability to confront difficult issues and solve problems.

7. Strong analytical skills, defining work problems, and designing a system of procedures to resolve problems.

8. Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Doctoral degree in Pharmacy preferred.

2. Advanced degree (MS, MBA, MHA), post-graduate training (residency or fellowship), or additional certifications.

3. Board certification in a relevant area of practice (i.e. BCPS, BCOP, BCSCP)

4. 1 or more years of related supervisory or leadership experience

 

 

Pay Range:

$178,006.40 USD – $195,000.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
