About Our Labor & Delivery Unit

Mt. Auburn Hospital’s Labor & Delivery unit is a trusted leader in maternity care, supporting approximately 2,600 births each year. We are proud to maintain a lower‑than‑average Cesarean (C‑section) rate, reflecting our commitment to evidence‑based, patient‑centered care.

We are home to the largest midwifery practice in Eastern Massachusetts, where midwives work in close partnership with physicians, nurses, and the broader care team. Together, we support a full spectrum of pregnancy and birth experiences—from low‑intervention, family‑centered births to comprehensive care for complex and high‑risk pregnancies.

The Role

Reporting to the Nurse Manager, the Registered Nurse (RN) plays a vital role in delivering exceptional Labor & Delivery care. RNs work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary care team to provide compassionate, high‑quality, and individualized nursing care to patients and their families.

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Provides direct care to patients and makes necessary nursing judgments. Responsible for assessing the health care needs of patients for the formulation of a care plan, its implementation and evaluation. Demonstrates the ability for decision-making by integrating theoretical knowledge with practical experience in caring for patients.
  • Coordinates the care of patients and directs assistive personnel in order to provide safe, effective, efficient, equitable and timely, patient-centered care. Demonstrates awareness of environmental forces on health care of patients and their families. Demonstrates the ability to identify resources necessary to implement the plan of care.
  • Works in a collaborative relationship with other health professionals to determine healthcare needs of patients and families. Develops relationships with patients and families that maintain and communicate trust and respect. Communicates effectively in the exchange of information. Demonstrate the ability to act as a patient advocate.
  • Education is planned and provided according to care plan and predicted Length of Stay for every patient who is alert and able to comprehend. Family members and care givers are included in education as appropriate. a. Participates in the development of educational materials/presentations for patients and/or significant others and documents outcome in the medical record. b. Ensures that patients and significant others receive education regarding discharge and the community services available.
  • Maintains annual mandatory education requirements, which include emergency skills and unit based competencies. Participates in quality improvement activities.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to patients, colleagues and Mount Auburn Hospital. The individual nursing practice reflects the goals of the Hospital. Demonstrates responsibility Participates in educational opportunities for professional growth, personal well-being and as required for license renewal.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program required.
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing preferred.
  • 1-3 years related work experience preferred
  • License Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required.
  • American Heart Association – Basic Life support Certificate required.  ACLS required for some specific clinical units.

Physical Requirements & Environment:

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.

Employees in this role must be competent to provide patient care to one or more of the following age groups:, Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 – 60 years, Elderly: 60 -.

 

 

Pay Range:

$37.00 – $95.37

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.  Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
