Responsibilities
- Safely operate school buses and transit vehicles in accordance with traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety, including checking brakes, lights, tires, and emergency equipment.
- Transport students to and from school, field trips, extracurricular activities, and special events while adhering to scheduled routes and timing.
- Assist students with disabilities or mobility challenges by providing wheelchair assistance and ensuring proper safety measures are followed.
- Maintain order on the bus by managing student behavior through positive discipline techniques and behavior management strategies.
- Respond quickly to traffic changes or emergencies by executing emergency stop procedures and following emergency response protocols for transportation.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and dispatchers to ensure smooth operations and address any concerns promptly.
Requirements
- Valid commercial driver’s license for regular van driving.
- (CDL) with a school bus & Passenger bus endorsement or ability to obtain one upon hire for yellow school bus driving.
- Proven experience in bus driving, school bus driving, or transit bus operation is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, transportation safety regulations, and state/local commercial driving laws.
- Demonstrated ability to work with children and maintain a safe environment through behavior management skills.
- First aid certification (including CPR) and knowledge of emergency response procedures for transportation are desirable.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting when assisting students or handling equipment safely.
- Excellent communication skills in English to interact effectively with students, parents, staff, and emergency responders.
- Experience with wheelchair assistance or paratransit services is a plus.
- Strong understanding of student discipline policies and customer service principles related to passenger safety.
- Ability to respond quickly to traffic changes or unexpected situations with calmness and professionalism.
