JOB TITLE:                                                       MECHANIC II

 

DEPARTMENT:                                                  Transportation

 

GRADE:                                                           63

 

FLSA:                                                              Non-exempt

 

REPORTS TO:                                                   Shop Foreman; Transportation Director

 

SUPERVISES:                                                  None

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:                                 12 months

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  __Graduation from High School or Equivalency;

__Three to five years of training or experience in repairs and maintenance 

of automotive equipment

__Must possess and maintain a North Carolina Commercial Driver

License with proper endorsements for the weight and type of vehicles 

operated as required by DMV.

__Must possess a North Carolina Inspection License.

__Valid North Carolina Driver License

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  1. Identifies, diagnoses, and repairs complex malfunctions in transportation vehicles and equipment including checking for worn components
  2. Examines and rebuilds or replaces mechanical components
  3. Lubricates moving parts of vehicle chassis
  4. Checks, adds and replaces brake and steering fluids
  5. Checks, adds and changes engine oil
  6. Rotates, replaces and repairs tires
  7. Tests electrical systems
  8. Tests repaired or replaced equipment for compliance with safety standards
  9. Operates specialized power tools
  10. Performs body repairs and vehicle painting
  11. Does upholstery work and glass replacement
  12. Operates wrecker and assists in vehicle recovery and towing
  13. May operate Fuel Truck to fill in, as needed
  14. Performs preventive maintenance (PMs) on all assigned vehicles at every 6,000; 12,000; 24,000; and 48,000 miles
  15. Performs 30 day monthly inspections on all assigned vehicles
  16. Performs Annual Inspections as required by NCDMV
  17. Responds to road side emergencies such as breakdowns and accidents as needed
  18. Assists and inspects Chartered Motorcoaches for schools prior to field trips
  19. Provide leadership training to Technician Mechanic I
  20. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the Mechanic II job classification within Bertie County Schools.

 

Work in this classification is considered heavy physical work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

 

Must be able to:

  • Walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch
  • Work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards and atmospheric conditions
  • Use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception
  • Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts
  • Use a variety of measuring devices
  • Assemble or fabricate parts at or within arm’s length
  • Operate machines, motor vehicles, hand tools, and job specific equipment and tools
  • Determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work
  • Observe general surroundings and activities
  • Hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normally spoken word levels
  • Use communication by means of spoken word to express or exchange ideas
  • Safely work in situations of exposure to blood borne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment

 

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and outdoors. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The work is typically performed in the Transportation Building and shop.
