What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Special Education position at Berryessa Union School District?
DUTIES: Directs the implementation and evaluation of programs for students assigned to special education or related programs. Develops and monitors separate cost center budgets for each program assigned to the Department of Special Education. Develops and implements new programs and projects for expanding and improving student services in accordance with IDEA and district needs. Coordinates supervision of support staff (psychologists, program specialist, nurse) with other District managers; maintains compliance with state/federal laws pertaining to Special Education. Coordinates and supervises the implementation and evaluation of a program of health services for students, psychological services, social worker services, pupil attendance services and the School Attendance Review Board and evaluates the personnel for these programs; coordinates the implementation and evaluation of programs for students assigned to special education or related programs, and participates in the evaluation of certificated personnel employed as teachers of special needs students; coordinates the placement and evaluation of students approved for out-of-district programs, including county programs and programs operated by other school districts, other public schools, and non public schools. Performs other job related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Valid California Teaching and Administrative Services Credential. Graduate work in curriculum and instruction, public school administration, education, or special education. Must possess Master's Degree; Doctorate desirable. Must have five years of successful teaching or related experience; administrative experience at site and district level preferred. Knowledge of current and successful educational practices supporting the needs of individuals identified with exceptional needs. Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English. Bilingual ability preferred.
SELECTION:
The district seeks dynamic leaders with high standards and personal integrity. While applicants are likely to possess different traits and skills, the district will seek individuals who demonstrate the “best fit” for the schools’ needs. The qualifications of each applicant will be evaluated by the district’s screening committee(s). District administrators, staff, and community members will participate on the interview panels. Selected finalists will be interviewed by district administrators and recommendations will be made to the Board of Trustees. Travel expenses for those candidates selected for the initial interview will be the responsibility of the candidate.
