What are the responsibilities and job description for the Traffic Engineering Technician II position at Berrien County?
DUTIES:
- Performs all described Engineering Sign Technician I duties.
- Helps oversee daily Sign Shop operations and assists with traffic- and safety-related tasks.
- Conducts inventories of new and existing traffic control devices, inspects signs for compliance, and initiates corrective work to meet current standards.
- Maintains detailed records of sign maintenance, repairs, and field activity, entering all information into the department database.
- Documents observations, testing results, and construction project conformance with plans and specifications.
- Uses project management software to prepare quantity calculations and construction estimates.
- Supports traffic signal management, including on-call response to signal issues.
- Reviews and documents pavement markings and oversees the Adopt-a-Road pickup program.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Associate degree in engineering or related field and three years of related work or course work in the road/construction area; OR
- High school diploma or equivalent and five years of experience in graphic design, manufacturing, inventory management, or related field.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- May be asked to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License paid for at the departments expense.
- Will be required to obtain PASER certificate and complete OSHA and safety training.
- Duties will require the use of personal protective equipment and the ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Will be on call for traffic related issues.
- Will be required to train and learn Roadsoft elements and traffic signal operation programs.
- Capable of working independently at night in the field during dark ambient conditions.
- May be exposed to extreme temperatures.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Able to learn and apply MMUTCD standards for proper placement of barricades and signage during road and lane closures to protect motorists and pedestrians.
- Able to apply established techniques, procedures, and criteria to assigned tasks, using sound judgment in handling details and following standard methods.
- Capable of using appropriate safety equipment and adheres to all safety procedures while performing work.
