What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Assistant position at Berrien County?

DUTIES:

  • Provides administrative, front desk, and clinical support to ensure efficient patient care and operations.
  • Greets clients, answers phones, schedules appointments across multiple clinical areas using electronic medical records and delivers high-quality customer service.
  • Conducts client intake and checkout, including verifying insurance eligibility, reviewing outstanding balances, preparing visit estimates, pre-registering clients, requesting payment, and entering payments into the electronic financial system.
  • Maintains accurate client demographics and organizes and secures medical records in compliance with HIPAA standards.
  • Prepares and maintains exam rooms, escorts patients, records medical histories, measures and documents vital signs, and assists the Nurse Practitioner during clinical visits and evaluations.
  • Performs point-of-care testing, blood draws, and injections as directed.
  • Ensures a safe and sanitary clinical environment by disinfecting rooms, stocking medical supplies, properly disposing of contaminated materials, maintaining required logs and safety checks, and reporting equipment issues.
  • Refers patients to appropriate internal and community resources as needed and maintains professional competency through continuing education and training.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate Degree in healthcare related field and one year of experience in a healthcare setting; OR
  • High school diploma or equivalent and three years of experience in a healthcare setting.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Certification from an accredited medical office assisting or similar program.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license and access to a reliable vehicle throughout the course of employment.
  • Duties will require the ability to sit, walk, reach with hands and arms and occasionally lift 25 – 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.
  • In times of a public health emergency, may be required to report for specialized assigned duties inside or outside of Berrien County.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of medical billing processes and clinical fundamentals, including anatomy and physiology, infectious disease, STD/HIV, and family planning.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills with the ability to prioritize work, remain flexible, and transition efficiently between tasks.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including proper grammar, spelling, legible handwriting, and professional telephone etiquette using a multi-line phone system.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to apply new information to current and future situations.
  • Accurate recordkeeping skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office and Electronic Health Record (EHR) documentation.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and familiarity with community services in Berrien County.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
