Position Overview
The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for a Georgia POST-certified Animal Control Officer. This position is responsible for enforcing Georgia state laws and Berrien County ordinances related to animal control and welfare, protecting public safety, and promoting the humane treatment of animals throughout Berrien County.
This position combines law enforcement duties with animal control responsibilities under the supervision of the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, sound judgment, and a genuine concern for the welfare of both people and animals.
Key Responsibilities
- Enforce Georgia state laws and Berrien County animal control ordinances.
- Respond to calls involving stray, injured, dangerous, or neglected animals.
- Investigate animal cruelty, neglect, and bite cases; prepare reports and evidence for prosecution.
- Capture, transport, and impound animals safely and humanely.
- Issue citations, warnings, and appear in court as required.
- Educate the public on responsible pet ownership, vaccination, and licensing requirements.
- Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation.
- Assist with shelter operations, adoptions, and community outreach events.
- Work cooperatively with other law enforcement officers, veterinarians, shelters, and citizens.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current Georgia POST Certification (required).
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Georgia driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to safely handle animals of varying sizes and temperaments.
- Strong communication, decision-making, and interpersonal skills.
- Must pass a background check, drug screen, and physical examination.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification as a Georgia Animal Control Officer or the ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire.
- Prior experience in animal control, law enforcement, or animal welfare.
- Knowledge of Georgia animal welfare laws and Berrien County ordinances.
- Basic computer and report-writing proficiency.
Work Environment
Work is performed both in the field and at animal shelter facilities. The position may involve exposure to adverse weather, animals of unpredictable behavior, and potentially hazardous situations.
